From what I heard on other forums the Honda EU2000i generator is very quiet, light weight, small enough to sit on the swim platform at mooring, and can run a 12000 btu A/C. Price about $900.00, any comments would be appreciated. I really don't want to spend over $8000 for a genset.

and run the micro, toaster, coffee pot, TV, Computer etc while at anchor. It works great. It is quit, light and stores easily in my lazerette. I plug it into the shore power plug with an adapter so I can also use it to charge and jump the batteries. As for AC I don't have it but a friend (who also has a EU2000i) has AC on his new Hunter 386 and he has found it does have enough juice to initially start up his AC. You could e-mail him to find out more. Look for Jeff Bacon on Manatee in the owners directory at www.hunterowners.com. Kevin s/v Katawa Cay

Great Search Tool Available

There's a great search tool available on this site that would give you lots of answers really quickly. Go to "Forums/Forum Archives" and enter some key words. I entered these and got the following hits: eu2000i = 30 (select all posts/title,message/match any word) eu2000 = 43 Honda 2000 = 115 (select match all words) The bottom one may not be all generator related, maybe some outboard related, but that gives you an idea of the capabilities of this search tool. The generators are not marinized so don't be surprised if it starts to show signs of corrosion from the salt air environment (also a potential safter factor down the road). Note the 2000 is rated at only 1800 watts continuous and and stressful startups will shorten it's life but that will depend on the load (power factor and watts), and the line from the generator to the load (length, wire size, line losses, etc.).

Storage in Enclosed Spaces

Be careful with storage of gas in non-approved closed spaces on board. I would drain the generator of all gas and then run it dry before storage.

had it highly

recommended to me just yesterday by my diesel mechanic. he said it could run my A/C and most anything else I wanted, as well as charge the house batteries.

I also have one

As on the previous post, I am also very pleased and it does all that I want it too, basically charge the batteries and keep the water heater working when staying at a mooring. It will not start the AC/Heat as the start up watts are greater then the maximum outpute and the unit goes into overload protection. Best price I found was from americanequipmentusa.com. They were cheaper by almost $100.00 and offered free shipping. They are located in Florida. ordered it and had it two days later.

For a lot less$$,works for me

links(if they work?) The idea is low cost & low lb. but still cool the boat and be so I can remove it all when not needed. Gen just straps on cockpit seat at rail on stren with EX facing down wind, and AC fit in custom made hatchboard mount made for fast EZ remove, plus Dave idea of adding EZ handles to ac. The 1000watt gen,Best buy I found on net=( $209 with shipping)is at http://www.bargainjims.com/Images/Products/ProductAd.ASP?ItemCode=GEN1000&cat=Ge nerators&subcat= And a AC ($140)5,150 btu that only needs 530watts at http://www.celebrityappliance.com/dwc051.html Maybe one can be found at loco Kmart? Any way you get the idea?

Got one on my H356

Works great and is taken off boat during the week. It won't run the AC but will run the Heat. Go Figure. I'm currently working on the boat, on land and use it to supply my electrical needs, runs all day.. Jim S/V Java

Add CO detector

I have found that even though I put the gen set on the stern (center cockpit) with the aft hatch & ports closed the wind / current combo at my mooring will place the cabin downwind at times. The addition of a CO detector will afford a larger margin of safety. It wont run my A/C ,but I would not "sleep" on this arrangement due to wind/current shift at my mooring . I love that eu2000 genset. Sometime in the future I may add a 3.5 diesel genset when we start cruising full time.

Do not store it in an enclosed space aboard!

It's not gas that explodes...it's gas FUMES. Draining the gas tank and running the engine dry may get rid of the gas, but not the fumes. You'd have to completely wash out the gas tank and the entire fuel system with detergent and water--and then air it out for at least a day or two--to make it safe to store in any enclosed space aboard...even in an engine room vented for a gas engine...'cuz those little generators are not spark protected, and neither is anything else in a boat that has a diesel engine.

Dana: Does that Generator work well?

I have seen something like that on the internet, but not that cheap. Does it work well? How long have you had it? How hard is it to move around? Steve

Don't store in living areas

I would NOT store the generator in any living spaces, where you might be breathing fumes. Better a lazarette, topsides, where you also might keep the propane bottles, kerosene lanters, etc. I would make sure that the lazarettes were aired out often, also. Steve

Honda eu1000

I run my Mermaid Marine 5,200 BTU on the gen and it works great

also have one

I use a Honda EU200i to run a 15,000 BTU air conditioner, and it works well. Stumbles a bit when the compressor kicks in but does not blow the breaker. Recently saw info on "hard start kit", basically a large capacitor, which can be paralleled, which helps smooth out the transient. Plan to try one, or more. Can't use the Honda electronic speed control now, maybe it will work with the hard start kit(s) installed.

Del what brand A/C 15k BTU unit do you have?

....I don't think the "eco-throttle" will work with the 15k BTU since the runing amps must be close to 12-13 amps and thats pretty much the max spec'ed output of the Honda EU2000

Don

This might be old news..

FWIW, my local Honda dealer (and an old salt) says that re the A/C, it really depends on what model/age you have. For example, he says the 1000 can run a new Mermaid 5000 built-in but won't/can't/shouldn't run the Cruise-Air drop-in 5000. Apparently the newer and more sophisticated the model, the more effecient the compressor.

Dana, I'll keep my queit Honda 4 cycle

I'm sure you are very happy with the genset you bought, it just seems very loud for me. The honda eu2000e at 54db is not annoying while carring a conversation in the cockpit 10 ft. away. The rating in the site you linked to, states 80 db at 3.3 ft and 65db at 24 ft. for the generator you have. I think when we look to purchase these kinds of equipment we all have our reasons. I chose the EU2000E for the following reasons. 1) I can get service from any of the honda dealers around the world. No head scratchin' there or blank look from behind the parts/service counter. 2) My tender has a 4 cycle motor ,I only need one gasoline can onboard. 3)The genset is so quiet and lightweight (47lbs.)its slighly larger than my sewing machine. 4)The power output is a clean sinewave and does'nt really care if it is loaded or not maintaining frequency at 60 Hz. regardless of load. 5)I can parallel with my neighbors eu2000i and have 4000 watts available to excercise my a/c system occasionaly.(Special harness required) 6)The honda can be purchased from a number of internet sites a quite a savings over the dealer. I usually try to look at long term value of a piece of equipment and decide whats the value recieved.

Tim,All good points from one set of needs!

I have dif. ones;As to sound,I it's low enough,so in setting in the cockpit only 3' from it running with load on it,You and I can talk back and fourth at normel and hear each other,in cabin I hear it less,That being said,I do use a 5/8in.X 20"X20" rubber pad under it,so vibes are not going every were, and a rain tent over it that has it's biggist opening to rear(downwind)(yes it get lots of air). In my case my OB is also 2cycle,so it's much better not to have extra other fuel not useible by ob. It's also lower (hight)then the Honda,so fits in under my seat lid(it open on two sides). I can buy 3 + of them for the cost of a Honda. I can keep going but as you see, we each have our own set of needs,so was just giving some one? other things to look at!So they find what fit them, and I bet this helps them think a little harder. Fair Winds
