Here are some photos of my recent project to install the charging kit on our Honda outboard. Having done the same project a couple years ago on our 6HP Nissan,(Tohatsu/Mercury), I must say in comparission, the Tohatsu was easier, and it cost a lot less for the kit. The Tohatsu also has almost double the capacity,but either one will still get the job done,(these are small chargers, and won't boil out the battery). Another thing I noticed was the Honda,(with two coils vs the Tohatsu's single coil), put out 13 volts at idle. Both charging kits are un-regulated, but the battery protects your electronics from over voltage issues. The Honda's ignition coil is on the outside, where the Tohatsu ignition coil is under the flywheel. This is why you have to replace the flywheel also on the Honda kit. The new flywheel has magnets inside for the charging coils. There are no instructions in either kit, but they are pretty straight forward on installing them. And all the wiring is color coded, so it's almost impossible to connect something wrong.
We've got a long nine day trip to Catalina Island coming up and it will be nice not having to worry about battery capacity for the long treks using the autohelm. Due to the prevailing wind out of the NW, we normally have to motor most of the way going to the island.
