The engine stalls going from FWD to REV. In FWD, N and REV she is okay. But if I apply REV rapidly from FWD it stalls. I have to come back very very slowly into N and then again very very slowly into REV for it works. It's a nightmare trying to dock with an engine that keeps stalling when changing gear.

help

Thanks

check the obvious things, like old fuel, fishing line behind the prop, fuel filter, air leaks....

when it goes into gear do you get a 'bang' or is it smooth. when I change from gear to reverse I put in to neutral and count one onethousand, then shift. gear box doesn't like a bang, or fast shift... (but you know all that)...

did it just start happening? anything change?

What's the idle speed in neutral? I have the service manual which gives a pretty high (as gas engines go) idle speed of something like 900 or 950 rpm. Mine was idling at around 1200 rpm, which caused a pretty good bang when shifting from neutral, so I lowered it to spec, and it's nice and quiet and gentle now. You only get so many 'bangs' out of those clutch dogs. Idles just fine in gear when it's warm, too, even though it's much slower than neutral idle (as you would expect).

It idles around 750-800.

I don't hear any Bang shifting gear. Mind you, if I shift from FWD to N at normal paste it stalls once in N. The transition has to be very slow to prevent it.

I just did the 100 hours service and cleaned everything that can be cleaned. no fishing lines around the prop. clean fuel. It's been like this since I got it. Brand new boat with brand new engine. This is my first outboard engine so at first, I thought thats how it is.

I will try to increase the idle and see what happens.

By the way, I get 4800-5000 RPM at full power, IS THIS normal or I should expect more?

Thank you all for your inputs and help.

agree to raise the idle, and see. If it doesn't bang going into gear, you're good to go.

maybe the mechanic tests it with the hose muffs (vs tank),
and once in the water there's more back pressure lowing the rpm...

but it should not stall going into neutral

I just increased the idle to 900 RPM and presto, no stall, no bang and smooth transition from FWD to N or straight from FWD to REV. Thanks a millions guys, once again you guys save the day.

I remain,
