I have a 1996 Honda 4-stroke outboard with electric start and an alternator and I have been having trouble with this motor. It's very reluctant to starting either with the starter or pull starting. It seems as if it is not recieving gas or something. If I do get it running it sometimes runs for a while and then just completely cuts out, no hesitation just stops running all together. Can someone give me an idea of what I should look at in order to get it back up and running like a champ? A mechanic replaced the plugs and cleaned the carb this season so those aren't the culprits. Thanks, Jamie

fuel filter

I HAD A 1990 8 HP HONDA AND IT ALSO WOULD JUST STOP. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS A PLUGED FUEL FILTER THAT GOES INTO THE FUEL PUMP ( IT LOOKES LIKE A PLUG WITH A SCREW DRIVER SLOT ) I CLEANED IT AND IT RAN GOOD UNTILL I GOT TO WITH IN 200 FEET OF THE DOCK THEN QUIT AGAIN. I NOW HAVE A MERCURY 9.9.

Not Fuel Delivery Problem

I spent all day yesterday with the Honda repair manual testing the fuel lines and found that the fuel is definitely getting to the carb without trouble. Fuel filter is brand new and is clear, tank is vented adn fuel lines are clear. Tomorrow I am going up to check the plugs but i had new plugs put in the motor about 3 weeks ago. One thing I was thinking is could it be one of the kill switches being faulty or not being pulled out all the way? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Jamie

electrical ?

not to restate the obvious, BUT: fuel + compression + spark ===> running motor. if you have fuel, and compression, its gotta be spark. the honda has a saftey kill sw, (its installed, correct?), and it must be in neutral, (right)... if you have electric start, you can pull a plug wire, and check the spark. it should be bright, and if you foolishly place your hand there, it will be very strong... lastly, could it be an automatic choke? or is there a manual choke? normally on 2stroke motors, I use full choke on a cold motor, until it kicks over, then 1/2 or no choke and restart... it should fire... -are the plugs wet? are you flooding the plugs with too much gas? this is the most obvious things to check, but you've probalby already done and thought of these... lastly chg the fuel... water in fuel could cause this problem too.... let us know what you find, please.... good luck.
