If you are considering buying a 4-stroke outboard for your dinghy, beware a design fault in the Honda 9.9 and 15 HP models (identical except for the camshaft and main jet). They are heavy (100 lbs) and, when mounted on a relatively light dinghy (mine is an Avon 10.5-foot RIB) they are very susceptible to sucking water into the engine through the idle exhaust outlet under a number of conditions. This is a known problem by Honda but they have refused to do anything about mine except tell me not to mount the engine on a small dinghy. (Duh... Like what else do you use a 9.9 HP for?) I know of four cruisers who have all had the same problem. Rumor has it that Honda US have actually reimbursed some buyers' money, but that doesn't compensate for the frustration you will experience. Stick to a lighter outboard or one without the low-mounted exhaust outlet.
