I've had this Honda 8Hp 4 stroke for a couple of years on my O'Day 222. Is it normal to require 3 or 4 pulls to get it started? That's the only complaint with the engine. Once started it runs quieter and get better gas mileage compared to the my old two stroke. Regards Tom Baird

Honda 8

Tom, I have the same experience with my Honda 8 model 2000. I filed the idle cam down a bit to allow for more throttle in the starting position but it still is not a first pull starter. David King h 26, "Molly"

Occassionally...

Have the 2000 Honda 8 hp, too. 9 times out of ten it starts on first pull, even after long layup between sails; HOWEVER, have noted on a very few occassions when I believe it is my fault for mismangement of the choke that I must pull 4-6 times to get it started. Most folks will call it flooding... generaly occurs when I reduce/ close entirely the choke before the engine fully warms up, killing the engine, then attempt to restart with too much choke reapplied. Well, that's my analysis to this point and I'm stickin' to it... until next time if that happens. Generally speaking, I'm extremely pleased with the motor although I think I need to see the dealer about the throttle friction not holding.

Check Fuel Filter

Great Engine! Quiet; clean running; good low-end thrust; excellent fuel economy. I have same engine 2x -- '99 model, also had same in '89 model. Both sometimes seem to be starved for fuel during start-up. Tow things seem to help solve problem: 1. squeeze the "pumper ball" on the line from fuel tank to the max, 2. make sure that the in-line fuel filter is clean. In fact, I've added an additional, larger (and more easily serviced) fuel filter in lint at the connection to the tank.

Honda 8Hp 4 stroke Hard Starting

Thanks for the responses, since MildBill usually has a one pull start, do you keep you motor in the upright position without tilting it between starts? I'm wondering since my boat is always in the water, if the fuel drains out of the carburetor since I always do a full motor tilt to keep the prop out of the water? The only time I get a one pull start is just when the motor has recently run in the previous couple of hours. So its definitely a fuel problem. I've tried changing fuel filters and plugs with no improvement, as this has been a problem since day one. Your input shows its possible to get better starting. Thanks Tom Baird

Throttle Tension

Marty, No the throttle tension is at the end of the throttle handle, and screws in to provide the tension. I tried spraying in "starting fluid" the last time but just ended up flooding the carb. I think I'm at the point I'll have to live with it. Noticed Honda now has an electric start on there new 8hp motors. If my back doesn't get better I might go that route. Regards Tom Baird

Success!

Its working great and starting much better now. Thanks for all your input it helped find the problem. It turned that the start position for the throttle wasn't set properly. An internal adjustment in the motor allows more gas in that position when starting. Thanks again Tom Baird
