I am hoping someone can give me an idea of what might be causing my Honda 7.5hp outboard not to run at low rpm's. This is causing some problems getting in and out of the marina. I am either going too fast, or the damn motor dies, and I am scaring the hell out of myself and the owners of those high dollar boats I always seem to drift towards. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.

bad gas !

My first thoughts are you might have bad gas !after a month or so the gas gets "bad" it gets gummy and sometimes will clog the jets in the carberator. I also have a 7.5 and I use a 1/2 dose on stabil gas stablizer and a 1/2 dose of gumout fuel and carb cleaner all the time and have no problems anymore. Try the carb cleaner (full dosage read instructins) if not remover the carb and clean it, Could be somethng else but this is were I would start first. These little honda are great engines and very reliable. Good Luck !

Fuel Issues

I had the same problem twice with a 6 hp evinrude. First time, it turned out that the carb float was bad and the fuel mixture was too rich the first time. Some time later, I had a spark problem (specifically, it was an ignition coil / power pack problem). Replacing these two components gave me good spark and it ran fine again.

Just had mine fixed

I have a Nissan 5hp for my dinghy. I had the same problem and just had it fixed. Picked it up yesterday. Had them do annual tune-up, but basically, the problem was a dirty carb.

Honda 7.5

I have a 1980 BF 75. Had the same problem, fixed it by adjusting the low speed jet on the carburetor.

Check the basics

I had a Honda 7.5 for several years. Check/replace the basics. Spark plug fuel filter, pour some gas in a clear container and see if it has water or dirt. I've put 2 cycle oil in the gas before to get the carberator working better. A little acetone in the gas will boost the octane and help clear out gum. I usually took the motor home for the winter and then stuck it in a barrel of water and made sure it was working before putting it on the boat. It's very hard to do much hanging over the transom. Actually the yearly maintenace was all the motor ever required.

Low RPM performance

As Tom said, check the basics. One of the common problems with small outboards is the idle jet cloging with gum and varnish. This can often be corrected by simply screwing the idle mixture screw in all the way. Count the number of turns, then screw it back out to the same position it was previously in.

Dirt

Odd are you got some dirt into the supply jet in the Carb. At low speeds its runs real rough and or stalls out. Probably need to have a mechanic clean the carb.

Stabilize the Fuel

After many frustrating years of problems with small outboards, I think I have found a solution. If you use one of the better brands of marine fuel (gasoline)stabilizer with every tank, summer and winter, you should avoid many of the problem you describe. Not only will it keep the fuel reasonably fresh but it will also reduce the gum and varnish that forms in the carburator while the engine sits idle for long periods.

No idle...

Clean the carberator. The idle port jet is the diameter of a hair and clogges very easy. A fuel filter helps alot because stuff does get into the gas tank.

Hey Frank, send me your carb,

I'll fix it for free. Nothing to it. Follow what everyone has said here and it'll keep working fine after you get it back from me. P.S. without a fuel filter,,,well, just toss it in the trash.

Sounds like the idle circuit in the carb is gummed up

SOMETIMES you can clear it with an add to the gas carb cleaner, SOMETIMES if you rev the motor and then hold your hand over the air intake on the carb you can get it cleared ( this usually works for me )try it several times, your hand will be sucked up against the air intake. (a good thing) Or you may need to have the carb cleaned by a pro. Dont give up on the motor, I have a 7.5 Honda and could not be happier, I think jim a. has the only lemon honda ever built. good luck, and keep us posted! Tom s/v GAIA

Honda 8

I have a Honda 8 It was new in the box but 2 years old. used 3 hrs and would not idle dealer cleaned the carb.6 hors and no water dealer wonted $ 145 to replace the water pump.Idid it for $18.00 still no water. pulled the side plate and found the thermostat was frozen cleaned it and the P hole. 4 hours more and no water now i took the thermostat out. water 5 more hours and it will only idel. Mechanic replaced the plugs and it now runs but not as good as at first. A dealer told me at the boat show the gas has to be no more than 3 weeks old and must use stablizer. and mustflush the moter every time you use it in salt water. I,m not happy with Honda. The factory is no help.
