Guys I have a late 2000 I want to say 2010 Honda 5hp outboard and it cut out and dies when in gear. It makes almost a popping sounds then cuts out then comes back and does it all over again tell it cuts out and dies, but only in gear. Anyone know anything about this??

Change the spark plugs and lower unit oil. I don't have any specific reason for this advice but i have found that doing this fixes most issues. And it's cheap.

Just some thoughts, I find that most of the issues with small gas motors are related to two things, fuel and/or spark. Most of my problems have been fuel related. Fresh gas!
Fuel delivery? Just put two Honda motors back into seasonal service and one would not start. Bled the old fuel, dropped the bowl, checked the float and then discovered a clogged jet. Ran a very small fine piece of wire through the jet, reinstalled and walla. First pull everytime. Checking for spark is pretty straight forward. Make sure the water pump is functioning as is should. Change the plug as mentioned above.

It's also a good idea to add carburetor cleaner additive to the fresh gas for at least the first trip out each season. If you don't motor much, also add fuel stabilizer ("Stabil" brand). Definitely add these at the end of the season and run some through the motor before you park it for the winter. Auto fuel uses some cheap additives that rely on the motion of a moving car to keep them stirred properly in the fuel. When auto fuel sits for a long period, these can settle out and allow the fuel to create a gummy substance that clogs float pivots and carb jets.

I just pulled the Carb on my Honda 2hp dinghy motor. End of last season it started running rough at idle, and then stopped idling all together. Ran fine at rpm, and you could start it fine with the throttle above 30%, but anything lower and it died.

Pulled the Carb apart, cleaned everything with gumout, shot lots of it through the jets, reassembled and she started right up and ran great. Small adjustment of the idle speed (had messed with it last fall trying to keep it running) and it purrs at low idle and disengages the centrifugal clutch and sits in nutral as long as she has furl.

The point of my story, clean the Carb out and chances are good it will run fine.

Drock, you probably already checked this but just incase......
Recently my Honda 8hp long shaft was doing the same thing running great at idle and then after a while in gear it would die, it would always restart after some serious priming/pumping where of course the carb bowl got filled up again. (these sip gas as we know) Turns out I had a very small pin hole leak in the line as it connected into the gas tank. If there is any loss of vacuum there it will conk out. My line was pretty old and after a second repair shortening the hose and resercuring with a small hose clamp it split there again.... Needless to say it all got replaced. Hoping that your solution is as simple!

I had my Honda 5 hp act up last summer after only 1 month with fresh gas. Changed out the fuel and solved the proiblem. That ethanol they put in fuel is evil to outboards! I'm running ethanol free fuel from now on! It's getting easier to find, too. Especially at marinas.

Did u bleed the lines to or just put new gas in the tank and run it for a bit? And should I use supreme gas? I don't know where to get ethanol free gas
