Here's a question about the brand new Honda 50 4-Stroke hanging on the fantail of my brand new Mac 26X: There is a tube sticking out of my engine about halfway down the shaft, coming out the front. It appears securely plugged, but I can't help thinking something should be connected to it, and that it shouldn't be hanging out the way it is. I have poured over my owners manual, but this tube does not appear in any diagrams. I have posted a couple of pictures of it on my website, http://home.earthlink.net/~sgkramer/mac26/honda50.htm I would appreciate it if someone could explain this tube for me. The engine was winterized by a shop last year (I got the boat and outboard in October, and it hasn't been in the water yet). Could the tube be something that was disconnected during the winterizing? Thanks, Sam

Wrong answer, but humorous

Obviously this fellow is joking. Any serious answers would be appreciated. I looked at a similar outboard today, perhaps a year or two older and there was no tube. Could the shop that did the winterizing forget to remove this? Sam

Humorous,yes. But may be true.

Sam, Before you laugh-off Bob's explaination, check with the factory. Many new Hondas have a built-in speedometer pitot tube in the gear case. Your installer should have known this. MArk

Hose ?

I have only been working on outboards for 15yrs and thats what I have always used that hose for. Maybe you could find another use.

I guess I'm wrong, now what?

My apologies to Bob Miller; I'm not completely new to boating and I've never heard of a speedometer. A knot-meter, yes, but a speedometer is new to me. Now my question is should I leave the hose as it is? It appears near the waterline and will get battered about. Should the installer not have left it like that? Sam

Leave it alone

Leave it alone.......if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Your Web sight

I went to your web sight to view the "Tube" and the pictures did not appear. Anybody else try to view them ? -Don

A Final Apology

Bob Miller was right, I was wrong. It is indeed a pitot tube for a speedometer. The Honda dealer who sold me the engine said it was fine to leave the hose as it is, that the water would not beat it to death. Thanks to all, Sam Kramer
