Honda 4 stroke VS Mercury 2 Stroke

Hello all
I am thinking about trading my 7.5HP Honda motor for a 6.5 HP mercury 2stroke motor as the it will be easier to manage with the bracket I have on the boat, any thoughts on weather it is a good trade?

If you can I would stay with a 4 stroke, If weight is the issue then what about a smaller one. The 6hp Tohatsu weighs 55lbs, thats not a lot more than the 6.5hp Merc, and you won't have to deal with all the mixing etc associated with the 2 stroke. Chris

I would trade a Mercury 2 strokes for Honda 4 strokes all day long.
Keep the Honda!

More things to consider

If you bought the Honda new, and know it's maintenance history, and do not know about the Merc. then I would be very hesitant to trade. If on the other hand, you know the history of the Merc. and they are equal or similar, then it comes down to preferance, and the weight factor. Either one of them will live a very long time if taken care of.

Thank you for the opinions, unfortunetely I don't know the history of either motor, All I know is that my Honda motor leaks a little oil not sure from where.

Does any of you know where I can find information about this motor, the motor is 6.6HP 2 Cycle with grip shifter the model is 0A724380...I've been looking online for a couple of hours with no luck...

Don't know what year your Honda is but I have the 7.5 hp and it's a good motor. The only issue I've had with it is old fuel. It doesn't run well if the fuel tank is more than half empty and a couple months old. Mine is a mid eighties model and it starts on the 2nd pull everytime. I purchase an upgraded Garelick motor mount when the original wore out. Best things about it, it doesn't smoke and it's smooth and quiet. Wouldn't want to go back to a two stroke.

It's a 1981, I have also had problems with it when the tank was low and almost ended up on the rocks.... fortunetly there was no wind to speak off and we managed to get back into the marina safely.

It has been running well since I've changed the gas and I also removed the fuel filter which was placed on the gas line. the only issue I have with it now is that it is leaks a little oil and when I run it at full thrautle it smokes (oil spraying onto the engine).

Any way I still dislike handeling it as it weighs a lot for the braket I have, on few ocasions I almost ended up in the water head first as I was trying to lift it out :)

God Bless the thief that stole my Evinrude 2 stroke that was problematic. I got a small insurance check and bought a Honda a big lock! The insurance check paid for the lock at least).

Keep the Honda, have it checked out by a reputable shop and get a good mount 4 stroke mount.
