Home? As some people say about relationships on Facebook, “It’s complicated.”
A few times on this trip, I’ve responded to people asking where I’m from by pointing to the boat and saying, “Right over there.” I’ve previously identified Saint Marys as being my southern base of operations and even joined the yacht club. This last month (nearly) has therefore been a cruise. It was nice to have that feeling of returning this afternoon, even if it is sort of a surrogate situation.
I’d planned to stop for a day in Fernandina but I woke up too early this morning and am not feeling 100% right so I decided to leave it for a day trip soon. It’s only eight miles and I’ll go on a nicer day. I might also leave it for next year if I get a good southerly wind although I don’t see anything like that in the forecasts for the near future.
BTW, if anyone noticed my SPOT fixes staying in the same position for a couple hours, I wasn’t aground. I just stopped for a nap and a long lunch. I was able to sail part of the way from Fernandina up to Saint Marys so it was a good day.
Speaking of SPOT, my SPOT 1 (The original unit) is still running on the same set of AA Lithium batteries I installed in Portland back at the end of September.
I’m looking forward to being back in Georgia. Except for the Green Cove Springs area which I loved and will return to often, Florida mostly felt to me like a big theme park. Just coming into the harbor here, I appreciate how much more it seems like the real world.
