There are holes on each side of our Oceanis 430 that don't seem to be attached to anything. Any ideas what they're about? Or maybe they're supposed to be covered and we're missing some hardware? Photo attached.

what is or was originally in that area inside??? Looks like a drain or vent hole, missing its clamshell cover

The lazzerette locker is on the other side. No sign of anything on the inside of the locker. You may be right about the missing clamshell, but both sides are the same. Unless someone helped themselves?

So on both sides of the boat there are holes like that, with a single screw, that opens freely into a locker?

What Apex said. Its clearly a drain for a watertight area. The screwhole is there to hold a vent cover that is open to the aft. It obviously missing; either stolen or forgotten in Marion.

This is the area where the reverse-cycle hvac system water discharge typically exits. And it would be a poor location for a lazzarette drain - the area goes under on heel. Ask the dealer. You are missing more than a clamshell, you need a through hull too.

The anchor locker drain on a friends' Bene looks just like that, I'd always assumed it was missing a piece.

Na. That is SOP for shallow (do not extend to the bilge) lockers. Our anchor locker is like that. Our gas locker is like that. On many beni's shallow gear lockers are like that too. On that 43 footer that drain is actually rather high on the hull. Put a cap on it and you'll be fine. There is zero risk of flooding the boat, and you want it to drain fast and easy. Here's what it looks like covered.

Both the propane locker vent and the port lazarette locker on the B411 vent on the transom. Anchor lockers are wet lockers, lazarettes should not flood.
