Hello, Below is a note sent yesterday to Hunter Marine. I am wondering if anyone has had this problem and can offer suggestions on cause and corrective action. I am concerned that simply patching the hole may not address the cause. Note that I did speak with Greg at Hunter Marine this afternoon and he has not heard of this before. He ask that I let him know what I learn after this is resolved. He did mention that where hole is is fairly rigid and he can't image hull being pushed in to hit the screw. It is possible we did run into something small and very pointed but if it is determined that puncture is from inside, bow berth will have to be dissassembled and water tank removed to determine the cause. note sent to Hunter----- ============================= Hello, I have a 1995 336, Hull # 51. I bought it from original the owner and am into my 3rd full season with it. Yesterday, after a day sail, and back at my mooring, while closing up the boat, I noticed the bilge pump coming on frequently. To make a long story short, investigation found a hole, as if a 6 penny nail pierced the hull then the nail backed out somehow. The hole is near the bow, about 2 feet to starboard of center line and about 4 feet back from water line on bow. Pilgrim is in slip now, on shore power until it can be hauled first thing Monday AM. Bilge pump in handling flow easily. Initial thoughts were that I hit something while sailing but 1st mate and I do not recall any bumps or bangs. Conditions during the day sail were 10 - 15 k winds and 2 to 4 ft seas. Not particularly rough. After looking as best I can under the sole with mirror and flashlight, now I am thinking that some screws I see exposed may have punctured hull from inside. What I see looks like a frame to support the water tank (I am guessing on this). I see screw ends exposed on the underside of the frame and one of the screws is very close to hole with its tip only less then 2 inches above the inside of the hull. Note that with mirror it is difficult to judge the distances. Water is squirting through hole, hitting underside of water tank or its frame, I believe, and splashing into hull to flow to bilge. Possibly the boat hitting a wave at just the right angle, or possibly hitting a solid object in the water, caused hull to push in just far enough to be punctured by screw tip. Again though, conditions were not particularly rough, Pilgrim has been in worse, and we do not recall seeing solid flotsam or hearing any bangs on the hull. I am wondering if this has been reported before and if there is any corrective action on file that I should tell marina about. If my current thinking is right, hole can be repaired but if cause of hole was the screw, it may happen again. I will call Monday afternoon about this. thank you, Bob Peters Pilgrim

Strange...

As a 340 owner I'd be very interested in what you find out. The hull is relatively thick up there and from my experience with drilling holes in fiberglass I'd be suprised if the hull could flex enough to drive the tip of a screw through it from the inside. Maybe there will be some additional evidence once you have her pulled and can look at the outside. Since I have the same basic boat I'd sure like to know if this was an easily avoidable puncture from inside the boat. Good luck on the repair!

My guess....

Bob: My guess is that it was always there. It was probably plugged with some sealant or such and has come out, causing the leak. One of our old harbor mates had an 1983 h'31 where a screw that held the sole down eventually (in 2000) went thru the hull? Who the hell knows how that happened.
