holding tank

The vega we have had a stainless tank behind the head. I pulled it out
because it was leaking and used it as a template for a new plastic one. The
new tank is taller, holds approximately 10-15 gallons and cost around 300.00
Can. I plumbed it so the head pumps directly into the holding tank and the
tank can be deck pumped out or gravity drained into the ocean. The bottom of
the tank is about 4" above the waterline so it should drain without a pump(I
hope). The downside is everything behind the head is now holding tank so you
sacrifice some storage.

The tank is above the head, at least partially? I hope you never have a check valve failure!!!

Yeah, I was wondering as you pumped up against a full tank if it
would back up. But as you filled from the top it should not be a
problem.

However all the old installations pumped out against pressure as the
thru hull was below the waterline. We do not shut off the seacock
after each use.

Is there a kit available for a holding tank, or diagram of an
installation? I'm going to have to install one sooner rather than
later.

Hello. I am working on my head and holding tank right now. (I will
post to my website pictures of the installation.) I have removed the
sink in the head and have put a 12 gallon SS tank there. I am
arranging the plumbing so that I can pump out the tank myself using
the original through hull. This was the suggested arrangement in the
West Marine Catalogue. There is a Y with the choice of a standard
pump out or, where acceptable, pumped out manually.

Most of the Vega owners that I know have dispensed with the standard
head and have gone Porta Potti. This allows for a weekends use.

The holding tank set up in my boat is very similar except for one thing. I
had to use a Y valve at the base of the holding tank because the pumpout fitting
ia right above the tank and the sea cock is forward of the tank under the
head. The gravity feed works great. I have used it for all of last seasson and
did not have any problems.
