Holding tank vent parameters

Peggy, I know you have likely posted this before...and I have looked in the archives but can't find this answer specifically. What are the "rules" for holding tanks vents? I am planning on using 2 vents, 5/8" minimum, but I don't know what lengths, angles etc. of runs are optimal. The tank is going in under the v-berth. If vertical vents are best then I am faced with running the vents up the side of the v-berth, not terribly asthetically pleasing. Can I run them up into the anchor locker (about 3 ft horizontal) then out thru the hull? Thanks as always! David

David Hang in there...

Peggy is is on the ball, responsible and also human. She is either sick or cruising. Give her a day or so and you will benefit. Then again, with your assumptions, I don't know if I would answer you. Asking free advice from a Pro, then getting pushy, come on David. r.w.landau

I thought I'd answered this one...

I remember typing at least part of a reply...but I guess not...thanks for the reminder post! There are no actualy rules...only guidelines. The industry "standard" holding tank vent diameter (ID--inner diameter) is 5/8"...but that's only because 5/8" is also the "standard" diameter for water and fuel tanks is 5/8", with no thought whatever given to to the fact that waste has to be managed...water and fuel do not. Ideally, to keep the tank aerobic, the holding tank vent should be at least 3/4"...1" or even 1.5" is even better. And the vent line should be as short--<3'--and as straight as possible...an ebow off the tank is ok...but ONLY that one. And the vent shouldn't rise more than 45 degrees above horizontal. Your tank under the vee berth should makes this easy to do...run the vent line off the bow end of the tank (if that requires installing a new vent fitting, get back to me...it's very easy to do)...far enough forward, skirting through the chain locker if necessary, to keep it out of the water at max heel...and come out the hull about a foot below the toe rail. Where will your tank be--on the centerline, or lying against the hull? 'Cuz we may need to move the inlet from the toilet as well as the vent to prevent waste from running back toward the toilet or out the vent while heeled. We MAY have a little work to do before the tank goes in...but it's worth it, 'cuz doing it will prevent a LOT of problems after it goes in. More questions? Btw...I'm glad to help out, whether you buy my book or not. But it wouldn't hurt you to have it...'cuz it includes a lot of tips that make the installation easier...and a lot more that'll help you prevent most of the common problems after it's installed. Just thought I'd mention it...:)
