Good Afternoon,

I am on the weekly e-mail distribution list for Active Captain web site and this week their e-mail is regarding holding tanks. In their e-mail they stated:

Holding tanks need a vent to allow displaced air to escape from the
tank while it is filling. Most holding tanks have a filter on the vent
to remove odors from the small air discharged on each flush. That
filter is the topic of this segment because, for some reason, they are
quite expensive - around $80 and up. This cost has many boaters trying
to stretch the replacement time often to the dismay of the crew and
neighboring boats.

Do Hunters have a filter on the Holding tank vent? I have a 2001 Hunter 290, and if it has a vent filter I am unaware of it, and if it does, it has never been changes.

Do we have them?

Peggy the Head Mistress (a former contributor), contends that those filters are inappropriate. Her belief is that a properly vented and maintained system does not need one.
Run a forum search and see what hits you get . . .

I do NOT believe that MOST tanks have a filter on them. Not really a good idea because once you overflow the tank you can easily plug up the filter and then your tank is useless until the filter is removed or replaced.

Using the proper chemicals is a much better way to prevent odor even though it may not put an end to it.

Unless a previous owner put a filter in, your 290 does not have one. The forum member, ThinWater wrote an article about those some time back. If you want to put one on, Read Peggy's and Thinwater's comments in the archives..

The Active Captain web site seems geared more towards spending money rather than understanding how things work.

Vent filters are a bad idea because:

1. They discourage aerobic digestion. That's why it stinks.

2. Overflow your tank and they may plug the filter, and collapse your holding tank.

3. Collapse your holding tank then you'll REALLY need the $80 filters, one in each nostril.

No

Had 2001 -290 and hunter does not put holding tank vent filters on any sailboats that I know of.
I did add a vent filter on my 2007 H-36 and maybe I don't use the right chemicals but with the vent filter on I don't get  the smell out the stern vent and on my second filter since 2007.
I do like the article about redoing the $80 vent filter and will try doing mine
next time it needs it.

although theses things may or may not work i personally think they are like power windows on a automobile eventually they will case you trouble (on a rainy day when they are down and will not raise the window)...

...we filter our intake water for cooling water to the engine and ac units and flush water to the head....

..... that is like closing the barn door before the cows get out but to filter on the exit side of a system seems a waste of money and time(closeing the barn door after the cows got out..

....why not just do preventive measures before the holding tank and live with the truth
