all, the holding tank on my C28 is black with no inspection port. i'm looking to replace it with an opaque white tank with an inspection port or something else if there's a better idea so I can see when it's getting full. The problem is it's such an odd shape. It's only 4" high on the hull side and ~11" high on the cabin side. It also tapers off as it goes forward under the port seat. Any idea where I can find one that will fit? Mike Elmore Windward Hull-C28 Hull #7

I'd love to sell you a new tank, but--

Wouldn't it be simpler to install an inspection port and/or a gauge in the tank you have? West Marine carries an assortment of inspection port retrofit kits...and they also carry one gauge that doesn't even have to go inside the tank: the DynaGage. It consists of foil strips that attach to the outside of the tank...it will work on any material except metal...and you can even connect your fuel and water tanks to the same read-out panel. However, if you're determined, we can order an identical replacement, but in white, for the tank you have from the same mfr who made yours.

Holding Tank Eye

There is a cheap way to be warned when the stuff reaches 3,2, and 1 inch from full. I put one on my c28 and will on my c320. Here is the site for the Holding Tank Eye. http://hometown.aol.com/botonsltd/index.htm Stan

Tank Eye is fine IF--

You have easy access to the tank...but it's not practical at all if you have to tear your v-berth apart or take everything out of a settee to look at--and maybe also have to shine a light onto--the top of the tank. I also have a problem with any tank level indicator that doesn't indicate how full the tank is getting until it's at least 3/4 full. In some tanks that can be only 2-3 flushes away from overflowing, which doesn't help much in deciding whether to pump out before cruising to your favorite anchorage for the weekend. But you're right...it IS cheap and simple.

im done

Peggy, I put a 6" access port into the top of the tank. Looks fine inside! I was worried that since the previous owners didn't use the boat much there would be a mass of dried up "concrete" at the bottom. I'll put a tank monitor in there also this season and be done with it for a while. Thanks for the suggestion. Mike Elmore Windward Hull-Catalina 28 Hull #7

inspection port retrofit kits?

Peggy, So are these inspection port retrofit kits the 'deck plates' I see in the catalogs? I wanted to install an additional vent in the holding tank to ensure plenty of ventilation and was thinking of putting it on an inspection port lid unless there is an easier way to do it, is there? Any suggestions on howto go about adding a vent/line? Thanks, Tom

Nope, a deck plate is a deck plate

...and as the name implies, it's a fitting on deck, not on a tank. Your fuel fill, fresh water fill and pumpout fittings are deck plates. Last year's West Marine catalog had a whole flock of Beckson inspection port kits...they're conspicuously absent from this year's catalog. However SeaLand offers one...like everything else SeaLand sells, it's way overpriced but it's excellent quality. And the've recently introduced a new replacement fitting kit...the fitting installs using a compression fitting. Call SeaLand for their catalog...800-321-9886

My recommendation for a gauge:

The AcuGage from Snake River Electronics...sold under the Dyna Gage name in last year's WM catalog...this year they seem to be calling it just the Snake River Gage. No sending unit inside the tank to clog up and require removal and cleaning...instead, a foil strip up the outside of it. I really like it.

Been there

Peggie, does it work on aluminum tanks?

Those foil strip capacitor gauges? My diesel tank is aluminum, but I fear that kind of gauge only works on plastic.

"Been There you are right...

the foil stripe senders do not work on metal tanks. I wish they did.

If you go to the...

...Snake River Electronics Site, they say they have a model that works on metal tanks now. Should be worth at least reading up on.
