Wish to remove & clean or replace holding tank on 1989 Hunter. Do I need to remove all cabinetry from head? Or is there a simpler way? It appears tank is too large to be removed from front opening. Tank is 15 gal. HELP!!!
Malcom I have a 1992 Hunter 37.5, and so mine may be different than yours, but my holding tank is behind a panel that is just aft of the aft berth (or, from a different perspective, just below the starboard aft corner of the cockpit). Perhaps Hunter changed the design between 1989 and 1992.
All you need to do is fill it about 2/3 full with water, add some low-suds detergent (Wisk is good), go sailing and tack a lot. The flush it out thoroughly with clean fresh water. You couldn't pay me enough to open up a holding tank to clean it and it wouldn't accomplish any more of value than you can by doing it this way. However, if the tank is metal and you suspect it may be leaking, that's another matter altogether. Replacement is the answer.
