Recently when the holding tank indicator was not sending the correct information the holding tank filled to capacity. I noticed the problem when there was "nasty" stuff in the bilge. All hoses are tight. The vent overboard hose was tight. I can't understand how this could have happened. After the holding tank was emptied everything is back to normal.. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could have happened?

Ventilation hose?

Did you check the ventilation hose, where it attaches to the hull? That connection is placed outside the cabin and less evident to the eye. Once you got an overflow for sure you have to clean that hose.

A couple of possibilities

If there's an inspection port in the tank, it may have overflowed through it. If the tank is aluminum, you have a leaking weld at a seam or fitting...that's even more likely if the tank is more than about 5 years old. To find the source of the leak, pump out and rinse out the tank VERY thoroughly. Fill it to overflowing with clean water to which you've added food coloring....use enough food coloring to give the water enough color to see. Block the tank vent, pump the toilet till you start to feel some major backpressure--don't overdo it...you just want to pressurize the tank. Wait a few hours...the source of the leak should show up. Don't forget to unblock the vent before you pump out or dump the tank.

Brilliant Peggy

Peggy, that sounds like a great idea and I just may have to give it a try. I am working on reducing the odors in a 98 376 which is new to us and I may just give that a try. I can't wait to receive your new book which I have just ordered. Thanks for your continued help on this forum. Doug

Corroded exit tube

I'm afraid there's a 95% probability that the exit tube on the top of your holding tank has corroded to the point where refuse is leaking out once the tank is full. This is a common fault on these thin-walled aluminun tanks installed by Hunter. You will probably have to replace the tank once you've verified this, since rewelding another exit spout onto a corroded tank would be throwing good money after bad.

If by "exit tube" you mean the tank vent line

It should never be used as an overflow...that'll clog it up...and a blocked tank vent can have all kinds of nasty consequences. The only thing that should pass through that line is air. If spilling out the vent when heeled is unavoidable, the vent should be thoroughly backflushed with clean water on return to the dock.
