Holding Tank Location on H33

While I'm pestering y'all for info on instrument locations, where is your holding tank located in the 33? I need to replace the all-in-one head I have as the tank is too small. Will go with a manual head - probably the Raritan PHII if it will fit, otherwise the Raritan Cricket. The pump out/dump overboard selector and the manual overboard pump are both currently in the starboard cockpit locker. I saw Terry Arnold's great post in the photo forum, but am wondering where else 33 owners have put holding tanks.Thanks.Tom

If the PH II won't fit, go with PHC

It's the same pump as the PH II, but on a Compact base...to fit in heads that aren't quite big enough for a PH II. The PH II pump is more powerful than the Cricket's, which allows it to "swallow" flushes that would choke, not only the Cricket, but most other toilets too.However, Plan B:What self-contained system do you have now? I'm wondering it would it make sense to keep it and install a second larger tank...reroute the pumpout hose to the second tank, with a macerator inline to transfer the waste?

Peggy,Thanks for the input on the heads. I really want to try to fit the PHII as I have kids who, despite my best efforts, still don't understand that marine toilets and the ones they're used to at home are very different. The ability to swallow without choking is key.I'm not sure what brand or model the existing head is, and I'm not near the boat to find out. It is a small, cube-like head that recirculates the chemical-laden liquid in the bottom holding tank area for flushing. Needless to say, it can be an adventure in odors even on a good day. In any event, it is many years old, relies on a creaky, short-throw foot pedal for pumping and is very uncomfortable. In fact, we're at a marina with rest rooms mere yards from the boat, so we rarely use the stinky thing. Next year we're moving to a mooring someplace else so need to upgrade as soon as we can.I just remodeled my home bathroom, too. Hopefully this will be less work!Tom

I know what it is...

An old Monogram Monomatic recirculating toilet. Hasn't been made in 20 years, nor have any parts or the chemical specified for use in it in nearly that long. Believe it or not, it was actually a CG certified Type I MSD...legal to discharge overboard. If you could still get the chemical certified for use in it, you could continue to use it, even in "no discharge" waters under the "grandfather" clause in the CFR. But nooo...you don't want to keep it. You might want to consider replacing it with a new toilet and a Lectra/San insted of a holding tank though.

Original was a bladder *grr

The 1981 H33 had a bladder in the starboard cockpit locker. All of those must have been replaced by now because they would really stink after all this time. I had replaced mine with a 12 gallon tank bought at West Marine. I made a cardboard box template that would fit the opening into the locker, and the 12 gallon model was the largest to fit.The second task was supporting it. I used webbing with plastic buckles, held down with hardware screwed into the wooden flooring next to the bulkhead. The webbing was strapped over the tank in 2 places. Worked great.The problem there however is that it takes up quite a bit of room needed when you service the transmission or stuffing box. I would end up unsnapping the holding tank and moving it to squeeze into that opening to do the service work. Truly a terrible job that should be left to only the small people of the world.
