Peggy Can you suggest/recommend a guage or method for determining the level of effluent in my Catalina 320 holding tank? Had one bad experience last season where I discovered the tank was full one evening with a crew of four on board. The Harbormaster pumpout boat was a most welcome sight the next morning! --Ron

dipstick -- not high tech but effective

I have a small hole with a stopper in the top of my holding tank. I keep a dipstick in the holding tank area, marked with inch markers. After using the stick each time, I wipe it with a disposable sani-wipe. Works for me.

I don't know what Peggy would say ...

but I posted an article on the C320 web site about installing an AcuGage. Its sensor is mounted on the outside of the tank. The link is listed below.

Peggie would also say AcuGage

Unless your tank is metal, the senders go on the outside where they can't get clogged up...and you can put up to four tanks--even if some ARE metal--on the same system for about $200, allowing you to check your water, holding and fuel levels at the same time. Their sales mgr Dennis monitors this site and is the most responsive person I know when it comes to questions or problems. Check out Pete's article and check out the specs for the AcuGage on their website at http://www.snake-river.org and order it from the online store here at a VERY nice discount.

Ron, I also recommend the Acugauge

I agree with Peggy right down the line. She recommended the Acugage system to me last winter. I installed the it last spring and now monitor the holding tank, my fresh water tank, and have the capability of monitoring the fuel with an add-on for metal fuel tanks. The system was on sale here at the site and I got it for a great price. I also got great feedback when I had questions about installation. Check it out. Simple, easy to install, no holes in any tanks; just wires to run from tank(s) to control board, a lead from the DC panel and a ground. Tom

Flashlight

Just turn a flashlight face down on the top of the tank to show through the opacity what the level is. Very low-tech yet efficient.

Whether or not any gauge is needed depends on

where the tank is located. If you have easy access to it to checking visually using something like a dipstick or a flashlight, you prob'ly don't need to invest in a gauge...but if you have to take the v-berth apart or get out a screwdriver to remove cabinetry in order to access the tank, a gauge is the only thing that makes sense.

Gauge never work

The gauge on my new H290 has never work. Dealer has tried two times to fix. Since the holding tank is in back of the bulkhead, I cut a hole and mounted a small cabinet door. Mark the tank at mid and upper levels and use a flashlight to check. Simple and not to costly to install. At lest now I know when to dump.

Thanks to all

Appreciate all the advice. I've seen the article at the C320 Owners site. My holding tank is coated black, and is buried under the salon settee, so the flashlight

Must be a Wema gauge, Dan

You've solved the problem to your satisfaction, but those who can't need to talk to Eddie Breeden at Hunter about a deal on a different replacement.

still trying to get new guages

I have requested that deal on several occassions, so far no luck. The dealer just fixed it again. I am sure that it will not work for long. What sort of deals have people been able to enjoy? Has anyone installed the accugauge on a Hunter 460 in the aftermarket? Warren Feldstein Millennium Magic

Warren, forget talking to your dealer

Call Eddie Breeden at Hunter. He'll give you a deal on AcuGage, but it does NOT include installation...you'll have to do that yourself. However, since their are no dealers, yards, plumbers or electricians at sea, installing it yourself isn't a bad plan. Otoh, if you never plan to be more than a mile from your dock, any competent mechanic can install it for you.
