Holding tank filling

I have a Groco HF head and over the summer I noticed when the through hull was opened and the head was in the "wet flush" position I would fill my holding tank rather quickly. I suppose it has to do with some leaky gaskets. I bought the boat last year (its a 1988) and don't know the last time the head was re-built. Is there a standard rebuild kit for the Groco Head? If so where can I get it? Is it easy enough to rebuild yourself (I am somewhat mechanically orientated)? Any other thoughts for other maintenance for the system? Now that the boat is out of the water for the winter I figure its a good time to address these issues. Thanks in advance. Tim

West Marine has rebuild kits for the HF. Check any of the catalogs and you'll find one for about $25. It'll take you about an hour. P.S. Wear latex gloves ;-)

You may need to do more than rebuild

If your bowl is filling up, that means your toilet is below the waterline. Rebuilding may not solve the problem. So I'd advise installing a vented loop in the intake line (it has to go between the pump and the bowl). That will protect the boat should you forget to close the seacock when you leave the boat and the dry/flush valve fails.
