Hoisting a H23

Kevin wrote recently that a sling hoist should not be used to lift a H23. Saying that it would basically stress and crack the hull. My local marina only has sling lifts even though it is mainly a "powerboat marina". Will lifting a H23 with a sling host truly damage it?

No, not at all! Hoist away!!!

The only issue is with long-term storage on a sling or hoist like a Hydro-Hoist. Greg Ex H23

Hoisting

Seems to me that all boats are hoisted out so why would a 23 be any different. I think you got some bad advice.

bad? hoist info

I also thought that it should be able to be hoisted but became concerned when some wrote that it was very easy to stress and crack the hull using a sling hoist. Search the current forum froim about a week ago for an entry labelled "Danger WIll Robinson" for the warning that was written. I still plan to hoist out this year but was just trying to be careful. Thanks for your advice.

Might be wise to call Hunter Marine again on this.

I used to have the number but have lost it. I'm pretty sure it's still in the archives. Greg

After checking the reference...

Joel, The person who posted the 'DANGER' thread advocated using a forlkift-type hoist, and this is OK advice. The reason behind it was that he had seen someone else's H23 get crunched in the slings... The person with the crunched 23 apparently did not use the right type of hoist to pull the boat- From reading the post, it seems as though the H23 owner tried to lift his boat with a crane-type hoist, not a marine travel lift. The crane would have the straps coming back together at the lifting point, and squeeze the boat while it was lifting. The travel lift (which is more commonly used in boatyards) has a very wide frame, and the attachment points for the lifting strap are spread wll apart. If the straps even touch the gunwales in the first place, the lifting carriage is too narrow, and will crush the boat in from the sides. (I've used the travel lift for my H23 several times with no damage.) --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Thanks, Jon. That makes sense now.

I had reread the previous post several times and kept getting hung up on the "make sure the slings are wide enough apart" part. Lifting with a crane, I can see the need. Lifting with a travel lift (my marina has 2, 1 for small and 1 for large boats), I just couldn't grapple with how to get the slings "wider apart". This is the first year that I've had the H23 in the water and just thought it would be easier (although about $120 more expensive), to have it hoisted and pressure washed at the marina and set down in the trailer nice and square. The two local ramps near me are closed for repairs this year. The other one close by I almost didn't get off the trailer this spring so I thought getting it back onmight be even more difficult. Thanks again. This is definately one of the best sites on the web for useful information. Thanks.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON II

All: Sorry for the delay in responding but I have had a chance to review the correspondence. A marine travel lift is fine just as a forklift truck used at some marinas instead of a travel lift. A sling lift will work too. But the sling straps are not connected to the hook. Instead a beam is hung from a hook at midpoint of the beam and the sling straps are attached to the ends of the beam. If the beam is long enough then sufficient keel weight will be borne on the straps without putting stress on the gunwhales that could cause fractures of the fiberglass hull. That 800 lb keel hanging underneath the boat and bolted to the powerboat-style hull has a pretty big effect on how we can lift our Hunter 23's. On a travel lift, the sling straps are widely spaced to accommodate much heavier full keel boats and place them on stands, so our narrow (8.5 ft) beam light H23 is easily accommodated and can be placed right on its trailer.

Use of crane type hoist

I've been using a crane type hoist since day 1 and never had any problems. I have the boat fully loaded with all the gear I'll use for the summer - including salmon fishing gear, but that's another story!
