"Hoist the Main Sail"

It is very difficult to raise the main sail from about half way up to all the way to the top of the mast. I play out the reef lines to relieve the pressure of pulling them up at the same time. Any suggestions?

Dan, I first cleaned the track then sprayed it...

with dry lube that comes in a spray can from WM. Now I can raise it by hand except the last foot and it drops like a rock. Terry

I raise my 336 main at the mast, as long as I have someone to tail the halyard in the cockpit. Boat into the wind and everything loose. Have no trouble taking it to within 1 foot of the top this way.

I raise the main on my Vision 32 from the mast as well. I've installed a cam cleat on the mast for when I'm alone. That way, I can raise the main, cleat it off, and go back to the cockpit to pull in the rest of the halyard. Then I can use the winch to tighten the halyard and I'm sailing. Really easy.

All responses are good ideas. I would only add that my Hunter dealer said to make sure you loosen the boom vang and main sheet. I had a 29.5 and this helped the most. Because of the full battens, if the vang and main sheet are not eased, the pressure forces the battens forward which tend to bind the slides closest to the battens in the sail track. Worth a try I think. Fair winds. Ken

One more tip

Cut a wax candle to fit in the sail track just above the slug. When the sail goes up, the candle will wax the inside track. Don't worry if it does not come down with the sail. After the sun warms the mast, it will slide down and rest on the slug to go again. Good luck. Ian

You could need to ....

...clean and lube the halyard sheaves. Also check to see if you have an internal halyard wrap. Wouldn't be the first time that a yard did that.
