Greetings and Happy Holidays:
I have a couple of questions regarding my 2004 Hunter 240:
1. I am joining a local sailing association which requires I have a sail number. Are they assigned by Hunter, part of the hull number or......?
2. I want to paint the rudder with bottom paint to avoid the issues I had this past summer with barnicals. Any suggestions on paint, manufacturer, application method?
Thanks,
Tim Moylan

Tim,

No clue about sail numbers!

As far as the rudder goes, why leave it in the water? For the 3 years we slipped ours I always pulled ours up and pinned it. I did install a 2-1 pulley system inside the rudder stock to help lower the rudder.

Regards, Dan

Hi Tim
Check with your local Yacht Racing Association (YRA) regarding numbers. Often boats on Lake Ponchartrain race under their builder's hull number.

Assuming your 240 is substantially similar to my 23.5, I simply pull the rudder blade up about half way, and then use my boat hook to pass a loop of line over the outboard end of the rudder blade. I can then easily pull the blade up to vertical. No paint on the blade, the fiberglas doesn't get saturated with water, no barnacles, and only takes a minute.

Kind regards

Hugh

One caution about bottom paint on the aluminum rudder head. It will cause dissimilar metal corrosion on the rudder head (copper and aluminum). BrianW

Thanks to all. I am going to pass on the bottom paint and haul up the rudder from now on.
Also have a plan for the sail numbers since the 240 is itching to race!

I also pull my rudder to the up position when I'm not sailing. It stays very clean. I wish I could say the same for my hull :(
