We're at the beginning of our search for a used 22' sailboat. Is there a timeline of changes on the "recent" (1985-Present) Catalina models? Any favorite years that stand out? Any thoughts on a keel type? Thanks. Salesmen haven't been much help!

The original Catalina 22 was introduced in about 1970 and some design improvements were made in the late 1970's-early 1980's. The interior was rearranged a little bit in the mid-late 1980's . there are 3 vintages of the original boat and then the MKII. I would tend to look at the 1980's vintages as the best value.

how has it been treated ??
We have a 1983 that we bought from a "little old lady" who spared no expense to keep everything perfect. For example, we got a pop top canvas cover with the boat that had never been used. Some people treat their boats with respect, other do not....... We lucked out and found a 22 that had been cared for and had most of the necessary retrofits plus several extras. All we needed to do was put on a CDI furler system. By the way, we're ready to sell after one season, because we're decided that the 22 is too small for our needs. We're looking for a 1980's 27 or 28 on a trailer. One major plus is a boat that has seen very little if any salt water. Let me know if your interested in ours.......

Hi THere, This will be just a brief reply for you. 1970 the very first year and the entire history can be found at Catalina's website, I found it very interesting. It is www.catalina.net Everyone of us have our preferences as to vintage but whatever your choice you won't be disappointed !!! I am a lover of alot of teak and great woodworking and craftsmanship, but I like better the improvements in the Mark II . Mainly the development of the polyester fibergalss resin and reinforcing, and regardless of interior I like the exta nearly 12" of beam that gives the 22 a very stable platorm for us cruising types. I could go on and on but maybe another time. Value for it's money if you take into consideration that alot of the earlier models are still on the water and being enjoyed as much today after all that time speaks for itself. go to catalina direct and see what the upgrade kits do to make up for the weaknessess in earlier productions. I see no sense at all in spending more than 6-7k for a 88 or above in great condition. depending on your conditions fixed or swing, but given the taller mast that would be a yes.
