I'm reseaching different yachts that I'm interested in, and been to the Hinkley Yacht website, yet having trouble finding people who own Hinkly sailboats. I wonder if anyone owns a hinkly and what their option of their yacht is? Is it a quality product? Any common problems? Please help me thanks

The number of Hinckleys and therefore Hinckley owners will be comparatively low compared to mass produced boats such as Hunters, Catalinas, Beneteaus etc. due to the price differential. You probably won't see many replies from Hinckley owners on the internet.....as Hinckley owners can afford to have people surf the internet for them.....beautiful boats, I wish they were in my price range. Their reputation is top of the line in all categories.

Ken, Thank you! From what I'm able to find out from a chat room is that Hinkley's are overpriced by 40% and none of the people knew anyone who owns a Hinkley. Maybe they live on a different planet.I can find forums from Catalina owners to Hunters but that one group of Hinkley owners is yet to be found. I could take the word of a sales person, but I rather talk to owners themselves. I didn't realize what a task I'm taking on. lol Thanks Kelly

direct up in Maine. They are very owner oriented and will point you to the right folks, I'm sure.

Tartan sailboats would be another boat worth a look in your area. I believe they are built in Ohio and are between the big production builders and the Hinckley end of the spectrum pricewise. Like Hinckleys they have colored hulls and look really sharp on the water and at the docks. Ken

There's one parked at my marina...

Georgeous boat, clean simple lines. We counted 10 (yes, 10) varnished teak dorade boxes, not to mention over 100 feet of varnished teak toerail, and other brightwork. Hope you like to sand and varnish, or can afford to pay someone to do it.

Check out "Skip's Log" at PYC

There is a Hinkley from our marina that was sailed from the east coast to Puget Sound and now the owner is off on another trip in the South Pacific. His log is at: http://www.poulsboyc.org/ then click on "Skip's Log". Skip has friends along for crew on various legs and his wife flys to the next port of call. Plus they have all the goodies: washer and dryer (oh, yes, they are Miele), a piano (with strings, not the electronic type), watermaker, generator, electric winches, etc., etc. This is called going first cabin. The last report shows them in, or on the way to, Tonga. You might want to read his log to see how things went and that might give you some ideas. Also, before he left he asked people not to send him e-mails unless it was important.

Hinkley's are top of the line...

... if you can afford one, you can afford to visit their factory and talk to the builders directly. That's what I would do. You don't see many resales because they're at the top of the food chain, so to speak.

Factory Visit

Kelly, My borther-in-law works at Hinkley in Southwest Harbor, Me. He took me on a tour which was incredable. Once you see the workmanship in progress and the time consumed in building this boat I believe you will appreciate the high cost of owning a Hinckley. Even with a family connection the boat is out of my price range. Good luck. Chip

A new SW 52 will run you well over 2 million

and at that price they are perhaps 10% overpriced not 40%. They are by far one of the finest sailing yachts built period. Hinckley does not build spec sail boats each boat is custom built to order. A friend of mine works there and does varnish work. The typical varnish work in an owners cabin can take as long as three months to complete. The hulls are built using scrimp, kevlar and carbon fiber. If you really have the funds to own a Hinckley then a Catalina or a Hunter are not even worth looking at. Comparable boats would include Morris & Swan.... There are only three SW52's available on the used market two 1992's and one 1996 listed from 820K to 980K for the 1996.. You won't find Hinckley owners chatting online most are CEO's, Investment Bankers or own thier own business and don't have time to be comparing winches and bilge pumps they just tell Hinckley to fix it cost is not an issue.... The yearly maintenance cost to keep a Hinckley SW52 looking and running smoothly will run you well over 60k per year....... If you want a boat get a Catalina if you want cost no object showpiece buy a Hinckley...

Need Crew?

Hickley 52 heh? Well, let me be the first to volunteer to be on your crew if your going to buy one! They are one of the finest if not the finest to come out of this country and one of the greatest family shipyards in the world. Everything is top shelp on those boats. You know when you see a Hinckley, because they glisten and shine and their lines are gorgeous. Good luck Bob
