Okay, I've got to come up with the HIN for my 79 Catalina 38. The boat was refinished/repaired where the # was, and there was no record of it when I bought her, the PO had no idea either, the PPO is no longer with us. I've applied for a new # thru the GA DNR but its taking forever! To any C38 owner out there Exactly (within inches ...a pic would be nice!) where is the # on your boat? I'm touching up some paint anyways so I figured I'd do some exploring with a grinder ...mabye its just full of bondo or something. If I know right where it is it should show up shortly after I get through the paint and gelcoat if any traces still exist. Thanks

more than likely it's not there

More than likely if it was a structural repair where your HIN was it is no longer there and was ground away. I'm not sure if it is worth grinding through it to find it. Because once you get down to it, it will prolly be unreadable.

Patrick Look on the transom, starboard side, just under the rub rail. Good luck. If you know the year of the boat, you can almost make one up if you have to satisfy the "authorities." The C34 website and others have FAQs where they explain how to understand a HIN. Let me know if you need the specific reference URL. Stu

Maybe Inside

I know on my 1990 and 1997 Catalina's in addition to the standard hull HIN, there was a paper(?) HIN under a layer of glass / resin on the inside of the boat You might look inside hanging lockers, under cushions, etc.

HIN

Patrick, if your boat is documented it will appear on the certificate. If not then it should be on a state registration. Good luck. Also some year models I've seen have been on the starboard quarter next to the transom corner just under the rubrail.
