I read somewhere a suggestion that it would be a good idea to have hiking straps on a Daysailor II which would facilitate sitting on the rail in a strong wind.

Years ago when I had a Flying Junior it had straps. My wife and I are approaching 80 and will be sailing on the Intercostal in North West Florida near Pensacola. It seems like a good idea to have the straps if for no other reason than to keep us in the boat.

My question is, what would be the best way to attach them to the boat and what means of attachment would is suggested and where would be the best place to secure the ends.

Actually, we do have a motor and do not intend to be challenging any gails but I think the straps might be a good precaution.

Thanks in advance for any help rendered.

Sure. You can get stainless steel loops or eyestraps and bolt them to the bulkhead and transom. The exact position is a matter of choice, but have found I like my straps close to the tanks rather than close to the centerboard. You can also screw fittings into the aft ridges on the cockpit sole, but do a good job with tapping and epoxying the holes so the screws don't pull out. I got my SS fittings (sliders, buckles, D-rings) from West Marine and my 2" polyester webbing from StrapWorks. (Don't use nylon--it deteriorates in sunlight.)
