Does anybody have a good source for heavy duty or high tensile galvanized bow shackles for anchoring? I use 5/16 G4 high tensile chain which has a working load limit of about 3900# and would like NOT to have a weakest link of a 3/8 galvanized shackle(wll limit of about 1100#) . I could use a 13/32 Wichard Stainless bow shackle but don't know if this is un-proper yachty because of galvanic issues or not. Thanks in advance, Al M P323 #217

Shackles for H.T. "G4"

You’ve put your finger on the problem we have in matching the various ground tackle specifications & sizes. Generally, to achieve a WLL of 4,000# - it takes a ½" S/S Shackle, with a 5/8" Pin, normally useable with 1/2" Chain. Given your 5/16 G4 high tensile chain which has a working load limit of about 3900#: Take a look at Euro Marine Trading: http://www.euromarinetrading.com/ Anja: http://www.euromarinetrading.com/PDF%20Files/Shackle%20Catalog.pdf See pages 6 &7 - “Forged AISI 316 or AISI 17-4 S/S” Shackles. It appears you could use their: 316 S/S Captive Bow Shackle #753-3/8" ~ 4,630# WLL & 5/16" Pin 17-4PH S/S Screw-Eye Pin D Shackle #732-1/4" ~ 5,500# WLL & 1/4" Pin 17-4PH S/S Screw-Eye Bow Shackle #752-1/4" ~ 5,900# WLL & 1/4" Pin Also see their notes on “limits” on page 2. To determine Straight* Working Load Limit (WLL): Divide Proof Load by 2.2 Divide Breaking Strength by 6 * A “Side” Loading requires a further (large) derating, depending upon exact geometry.
