High-rise exhaust??

I have replaced my MD7A with a Beta 14. The installation instructions tell me I should have an exhaust with "high-rise injection bend". So I bought the high rise exhaust, but now the aft engine compartment panel cannot be installed. The exhaust gets in the way. The MD7A had no high-rise exhaust, and I do have a very high goose neck in the exhaust hose, almost to the very top of the transom. So, Beta owners (and anyone else): do YOU have a high-rise exhaust pipe? Do I really need one, since the exhaust hose has the very high goose neck?I hope I don't need one, as I would like to keep the Beta enclosed like the MD7A was. Not only to make it quieter, but easier to create ventilation and keep the engine heat from filling the entire stern of the vessel.

I should add that I have a waterlock/silencer, looks like factory original, stainless, cylindrical. Seems to be functional, but I can see staining which indicates it has a minor leak. Being 39 years old (the silencer, not me!), I am inclined to replace it.

I also have the beta 14.I installed mine with the help of the seller/mechanic. He provided the high rise exaust piece. It looked like something he constructed from plumbing parts. I thought it was odd. But he probably did it that way because of the problem you are having. It was wrapped with alot of heat cloth.I would call Beta in NC (if you are in the USA) on monday. They very likely can tell you what plumbing pipes to pick up..groundhog"gene_neill@... [AlbinVega]" AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com wrote:

Thanks, Groundhog. Sorry I didn't respond for so long, I didn't get the usual notification that someone had replied. Did you have to modify (or eliminate?) the aft engine cover to allow for the high rise pipe? From what I'm seeing from Beta Marine, and from where I believe the waterline would be in the engine compartment, I most definitely DO need the high-rise elbow! And even with it, I can never get to the recommended height of 12" (30cm) from the waterline to the bottom of the pipe at the high rise. By my best guess, I get 5.5" (14cm). In order to get the recommended 12", the exhaust pipe would come up through the cockpit floor!! Beta also says I need "a drop of about 9" (23cm) from the exit of the exhaust elbow to the inlet of the waterlock muffler." Mine appears to be about 3". With a different style muffler I MIGHT increase that to 6".Sigh ...I would probably be in full-blown panic over this, except that I KNOW the original MD7A had an even lower exhaust. More research to be done.

Im at my Albin Vega for a couple days. I could take pics if you want. My vega, Good Things has been from the chesapeake to florida and back with the beta 14 installed. Not a hickup.groundhog"gene_neill@... [AlbinVega]" AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com wrote:

I would LOVE to see any pics of your exhaust. Or anything else about your boat that you want to show off!Everything I'm reading (from Beta and elsewhere) insists that you must have a MINIMUM of 12" vertical clearance from the waterline to the bottom of the exhaust elbow. But this is simply not possible in an Albin Vega. I have exactly 5". If I built a custom elbow, I MIGHT be able to achieve 6.5-7". Not worth it, IMHO.The rationale is that a big following sea can (and often will) drive enough water into the exhaust to overcome the muffler, and force water into the engine. I wonder if the very high gooseneck in the exhaust hose at the transom is how Albin dealt with this issue. Because I have never heard of any Vega getting water into the engine through the exhaust.

Hey Gene. I have a Farymann in Valkyrie and I don't have that much of a rise in my exhaust manifold. BUT...I have a rise in the exhaust hose after my muffler it also has a "very high gooseneck in the exhaust hose at the transom". That rise is, I think, should be more than enough. Just thinking... Hi, Jim. Yeah, the gooseneck MUST be enough to prevent water intrusion, or we would have heard about failures. For now, I think I will just reconnect everything the way it was, and move on to the next project. I still have an electrical system to build! And on a happy note, the Beta is perfectly aligned now. A couple weeks ago, I ran temporary fuel and exhaust lines and fired her up for the very first time ever. She started without much trouble and purred like a kitten. Now showing 0.2 hours on the meter. :)

Gene, Where did you install the ignition and gauges? Walt
