I have a 1987 Catalina 36 with a M25 Universal. I am thinking about upgrading the alternator but have some concerns that doing so may cause the engine to overheat. Anyone have any experience with upgraded alternators? Any recommendations?

I haven't had any problems

Ted, I upgraded my electrical system on my 86 C-36 with no issues. I have an Ample Power 125 amp alternator and have never experienced overheating due to the alternator. One thing you should do is use a high-quality fan belt such as a Gates "Green Stripe". You can get these at NAPA auto parts. There is one person who upgraded his alternator with a 90-amp alternator that uses the same body as the stock Motorola. Check out the International Catalina 36 Association web site for the details. Good luck, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Alternator and M25xp B

I went with a Balmar 75 amp model. That's about the largest they recommend with the 3/8 inch belt. I had to get a slightly longer belt, but used the stock mounting with just a little filing to make it fit. I've had no problems, just a little more belt wear, although I'm still on the first one I put on four years ago. No increase in engine temperature. The biggest improvement went to the 3-stage external regulator I put in at the same time. I think the stock alternator can be converted to use an external alternator configuration.

C36 Association

Ted You have a C36. You should go to the C36 Assoc. website. There is a very good writeup there of just what you need. Stu
