Hi all,

I'm new here. Odly, I didn't immediately see a 'new' forum, so this is where i'll post. Mods, feel free to move... My history, in a nutshell, my family had a Cal-25 growing up, then that was upgraded to a J/30 a few years ago. I like both boats. Cal-25 was comfortable to sail, and the J/30 has a lot of potential to make it a great racer.

My father gets a phone call from a friend of a friend last weekend. This person is wanting to sell his 'little sailboat' that hasn't seen water in a decade or more. He doesn't really know what the value of it is, so asked him to appraise it for him, and spread the word to try and sell it. To me, a little sailboat is a laser. This was a hunter 19. Best i can tell, it's from '72-'74.. but I don't really know these boats, google doesn't tell me much either.

The rubrails are rotted, the keel(looks to be steel?) is rusted and pitted in some places. I crawl around and look at the seams, and woodeork in the cuddy. It all looks dry and in good shape, considering it's not been maintained in years. solid fiberglass, no wooden cores to rot. A minor bump where the keel settled into the hull. Looks like that would flex out once the cradle is rebuilt. Has a tanzer 22 rudder and tiller though..? The rigging and sails have been lept dry and inside for years.

All in all, it's in fairly good shape. 200 hours of work to make it sea worthy, 500 hours to make it pretty.

So I give a good guetimate on it's price (our purpose, to appraise). Based on it's condition and that it's too big to haul in and out of the water every weekend, and it's too small for your average joe.

Long story short (too late), impulse buy, and we're going to pick it up this weekend. Might not have been impulse to my father. For all I know, might be getting sick of me insisting he gut the J/30 to make it almost the same speed as a J/29, and to rework the rudder to eliminate that annoying weather helm. Maybe he figured i'd leave him alone if I had something to tinker with.

So be prepared, I may have some some questions about the design of these and most importantly, rigging questions. This will be a good summer project.

Congrats on your buy. Hope you are wrong on your estimates and can get on the water sooner than that!

Hi, and thanks for the greetings.
It doesn’t match any of the 18-20’s listed here: http://hunter.sailboatowners.com/ind...1&brand=Hunter

It looks more like these, with the same cockpit as the second and third links:

http://bills-log.blogspot.com/2010/04/barangoola-hunter-19.html
http://www.hunterassociation.org.uk/site/ha_hunter_boat_range.php?boat_id=25

Do clones of these boats show up often or at all?

Since the marina is a 3 minute drive from where the boat is now, I’m going to put it on slings tomorrow and inspect the cradle and repair it for the drive home. I’ll get pics and the HIN then.

British Hunter

If that is what your boat looks like, then it appears what you have is not a North American Hunter (made by Hunter Marine), but one built by the British company Hunter Boats Ltd., which is a completely different company. You have already found the British Hunter Association web site (http://www.hunterassociation.org.uk) which should provide you with plenty of information about those boats. Some better pictures would be great in confirming what you have.

Cheers,
Brad

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Looks like it's the British company. Almost the same layout except my winches are mounted differently, and I have no traveler.

There isn't a HIN on the transom either.

For anyone interested, images can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150600870075252.685380.580135251&l=8868807fb1

so far the parts list is:
- quart of anti fouling paint.
- filler for the keel
- sheet of 1/2" marine plywood.
- pump with float switch
- battery and box
- not sure on what i'll replace the rubrails with.

Haven't had a chance to check the rigging, but for my own comfort, i'd probably replace most if not all the running rigging.

Also, the whole cradle needs to be built. We had half a bed of rotted wood in the truck by the time it was ready to roll.
