I guess my post on 9/8 titled Racor and Algae must have slipped by. If you have a moment, could you look at it and get back to me? Thanks. George

Return to fuel cleaning

Sorry for losing another one, and thanks for the reminder. I seem to have problems with these computer things, probably because I started when the slide rule was a godsend. It is hard to say how the coffee got into the tank. Fuel purchased at the gas dock is supposed to be tinted red, as explained in the other posts. Some additives can change the color of fuel. Rust in the tank is also a possibility. I would think the the combination could be involved, rusty water dispersed into the fuel. I have no clear cut answers. New fuel and a tank cleaning might be the most economical. I'm sure that a trucker would be glad to dispose of the old fuel. You could send a sample of the stuff to a lab that tests oil quality. (Maybe Texaco) This could help determine if what is in the tank can be saved. If the test showed that you had discolored good stuff, you could keep on running. What ever is done, be sure to get any water off the bottom of the tank. This is often tougher than removing the fuel. I concur with your logic that the filters are constantly stopping anything large enough to do harm. Depending on the source of the discoloration, you may not be running long enough to make gains. The claims of the guys that make the magnetic fuel polishers indicat that that might be an answer. If you want to take the time to try one out, send me an address where it can be received and I will pack one off to you. You make the installation and observe the results. A report on what happens will be considered payment for the unit. Let me know the size of the flexible hose that runs from the fuel tank to the Racor. That gets cut and the unit plugs into the gap.

Thanks, Gordon

I'd be delighted to try the magnetic fuel polisher. I remember that Practical Sailor said they did nothing, but then again, just because it's in print doesn't make it so! Unfortunately, I'm on a trip, away from my boat, but when I return home in about 10 days, I'll check the hose size and get back to you with that and the address. Regards, George
