How often does the wheel bearings need to be replaced/repacked?

If you don't have bearing buddies, you should. I regrease each season. The zerk fittings make it easy. Measure diameter carefully, they come in I think two sizes. They run about $30/pr.

I did repack them at the beginning of every season and recheck them during and at the end of season with buddy bearings, yes it may be over kill but never had a problem on the road.
The inside seal and bearing are the ones to check,I used it in salt water.
At the end of season would pull every thing and repack and clean spindle with light sanding and regrease every thing.

We have bearing buddies (or a clone) on our trailer. In spring, or before a long trip, I pump in some grease, then jack the trailer up and give the wheel a spin. If it spins nicely, no grinding, no sticking, no wobble, I consider it OK.

During the season, I check the bearings after 30 to 60 min of highway travel. If the bearings are still cool, things are OK. Another thing to look out for is for grease being thrown out of the bearing on the inside of the rim, this indicates that a seal has blown.

In three years, I've replaced one bearing because its inner seal had gone, and the other I simply disassembled, cleaned and regreased because it was still in great shape.

Here's a great step-by-step writeup on changing a trailer bearing.

kenn, thanks for the step by step write up, we just did a bearing change on the boat trailer, a farmer friend helped, told me he did it so many times his life, he can not remember. Need to do again on another trailer, will have the "step by step " to help me remember.

thanks,

if you have the time after a long trailer haul its a good idea to let the hubs cool abit before backing into the water...if the water cools the hubs it sometimes creates abit of vacuum in the hub which allows water in...thats why brg buddies are good...not only for greasing but they maintain a positive pressure
