Does the new additive to diesel fuel damage both poly and epoxy fiberglass fuel tanks or just poly resin tanks?

What additive?

My tank is stainless steel. Name the additive and then we can research it's effect on epoxy.

I don't know the name of it, their was a bunch

of buzz about it on the board about 2 months ago when it started getting added to the fuel in lots of areas 'cause it was dissolving fiberglass tanks. I think its Ethanol: http://www.uscgboating.org/waypoints/archived/nov05/art2_gasoline.htm i may have been mistaken, according to the BOAT US article it was in gas only, not diesel.

Try Boat US

They wrote it up in their quarterly Seaworthy magazine or their main magazine

In the first paragraph

it states that it will NOT affect diesel fuel systems. It is a GASOLINE additive!!!

Alcohol Bad for diesel

Alcohol increases the octane rating of fuel. This is very bad as octane is roughly inverse to cetane. High cetane good!!!!! High octane bad.

Ethanol

which has been added to gasoline has been creating havoc with boats with fiberglass tanks cause it eats the glass and puts the goo into the engine, it also has been trouble with steel tanks cause it's been cleaning the tank and putting the dirt into the engine. There have been about 4 twin engine boats on my dock with carb & fuel filter problems and one guy with a Bertram that has twin fiberglass tanks having all kinds of problems, the thinking is that when it sat all winter with full tanks it scubbed the tanks. I'm glad I have a Diesel

don't confuse gasoline and diesel

Don is correct, the Seaworthy (Boat US insurance newsletter) information has been about ethanol used in place of MBT (an anti-smog additive in common use in some northeastern states until it was banned) in New York State. The solvent effect upon fiberglass/epoxy tanks is only being reported for gasoline; so far as I know ethanol is not/cannot be used in diesel fuel. BoatUS insurance is the best overall deal around, the company has the best overall disaster response record, and Seaworthy is a great source of information on safety/insurance issues we all want to know about. I highly recommend them if you're shopping for an insurer.

Diesel additives

Diesel fuel additives have no effects to fiberglass tanks and piping. However gasoline blended with ethanol can be questioned. I have experienced that gasoline blended with ethanol to disolve pipe thread sealant, and I experienced a gasoline leak. I have had no problems with gasoline blended with ethanol in fiberglass tanks. Also remember to be ready to change out the fuel filter. Ethanol will clean the fuel system as will bio-diesel.
