well Rick, I have owned a boat since the mid-seventies. We have used TP in our toilets over all of these years and have NEVER experienced a clog. We do NOT use the double thick stuff like "Charmin" or some of these other plush products. We try to guide our guests to not use TOOOO much paper.

Our Hunter Vision has a SeaEra electric toilet with a macerator. We have had a couple of ladies that were aboard try to flush a "baby wipe". They were NOT successful. The macerator will NOT grind them. The just get hooked on the macerator blades and spin unit they are clean. Using a pair of needle nose pliers they are very easy to remove.

If you use marine type or septic safe paper (other stuff may also be fine) there should not be a problem unless they stuff the toilet with the stuff.

Our "low flow" toilets at home plug up more often than I would like to talk about.

On all of our bareboat charters, my wife and I have had no problem with the TP in the Bucket rule. We've also traveled on land in countries where the same rule applied. No problem here.

As for taking a shower below decks, we do it, and we ventilate when we can. Never had a problem with mold or mildew. We also just as frequently bathe on the top side when there's a shower attachment available.

Well, In 40 years of marine flushing...

.... I have only had clogs that didn't self-clear a couple of times. Twice, despite instructions, guests tried to flush paper towels. In another case, a kid old enough to know better put something which I have forgotten down the head. That's all I can recall, other than pump failure a couple of times. Hardly worth getting worked up about. My wife does prefer the zip bag for TP for guests; I have no such rule and find if I simply instruct them how much to use and urge them to flush thoroughly between uses, I don't have a problem.

Paper in the bag.. including wet wipes and things like that.. most boats I've sailed on have that same policy. Never had a head clog.. Have had the manual pump out pump fail from the hard chunks of calcium material clogging the outlet joker valve.
Regular paper is OK as long as it is not folded into a hard wad that can't soak to softness..If someone really doesn't want to put the paper in a bag, then make sure they don't make a paper clump and make sure that they flush after each wipe.. Ya need a big tank to do that !

" the practice of never putting toilet paper in the head, but rather dropping the soiled sheets in a plastic bag for later disposal ashore" is, apparently, common in Europe; at least southern Europe.
In 2004, we ( 4 couples) chartered a Bennateau 56 (as I remember) in Piraeus, Athens and cruised the Cyclades. We were instructed to do exactly as noted above to prevent any of the (4) heads from clogging. It wasn't really much of an issue.

we have the policy, it works just great, it is not a big deal at all, all of the boats I sail on have the same request .........but maybe we should clarify that if it is waste that is involved, the paper goes in, with a request to minimize please.
