Hello out there! I have recently aquired a 83 Hunter 27 which was towed off a shole and stupidly at low tide! The price was right but the rudder was broken off about 2/3 of the wway up. I need to know the original specs for the size and shape of the rudder in order to have one made locally. I cannot afford to buy one from Hunter at this time but I need to get the boat out of where it is as soon as possible. If anyone can help please e-mail me at : lsammons@adelphia.net I thank you in advance Lynne

Call Foss Foam.

Pretty sure that Foss Foam made the original rudder. Give them a call and see if they have the specs. You can also call Hunter but I think Foss is a better bet. http://www.newrudders.com/

Jury rig

You could jury rig a rudder for one move. I'd get a piece of 3/4 or 1 inch plywood, cut it to approximate the shape you think the rudder had, and bolt it to what is left of the old rudder. That should be enough for a one or two day sail to the port where you want to do the repairs. As a back-up, when I have moved Lady Lillie to port for diagnosis of unknown issues, I called the local towing operation to stand by. They knew our route, accompanied us as we set out, and were ready to respond quickly if we ran into trouble (which we did not.) Good Luck, and Merry Christmas, David Lady Lillie
