Hi, I just bought a 1976 boat that came with a 1976 Johnson 6 HP. It's pretty gunky and it may be siezed, but I'd like to try and see if I can bring it back to life. I've ordered the maintenace manual for this and will be getting that in soon, but does anyone out there have a high-level plan for how I should attack un-gunking and re-lubing this motor? I will document my steps for this site, but has anyone brought a motor back from the dead? I think the areas I need to focus on are: Carbourator, impeller?, spark plugs, fuel pump, hoses? Should I take the whole thing apart and put it back together again or should I just un-gunk certain items? Thanks for any help you can give me.

hi Paul. i had the privledge of working on my 74 6hp this summer . i had no problems getting a carb kit, water pump kit including the housing, fuel pump and a new base gasket . what i do need is a new carb. this i am told is no longer available. the motors are very simple to work on with a minimum of tools .if you have a manual you should have no problems. i had mine totaly apart to facilitate some repairs you may not have to go this far .after all was done i did get it running quite well but i had to Macgyver the carb as to it being seized .if you need to rebuild the engine,in my opinion its not worth the expense ,buy new or newer .up here(saskatchewan)older used out boards sell for 300-500 cnd. about the cost of a rebuild and parts. i have been pricing new o.b's and it seems that ther are alot of deals down in the USA . good luck , if you have any specific questions you can e mail me at workman02 (remove this)@hotmail.com please indicate apropriate subject in subject line Mike

Two-strokes

Are almost..dare I say it..unbearably easy to work on? My background is in four-stoke, EFI automotive engines. If it's not running right, there's always something wrong, and sometimes it can take a long time to figure that something out. But with a carb'd two stroke - you have a carb, magneto, water pump, piston, and fuel pump, and they're all quite simple compared to their four-stroke counterparts. My 1985 merc 9.9 has been stalling at idle in gear as of late. It probably needs new plugs. If that doesn't work, I'm not even sure where to go next!

Heres some help Paul.

Hi Paul, I bought an 85' Evinrude 9.9 awile back. I found that the website below has one of the best forums I have seen. Those folks are always willing to help! It is for Johnson/Evinrude, however you can link to most of the big players in the old boat market! Hope it helps. Jack Hart SEA-YA!

Seized.

If it it frozen, Remove the head turn it with the pistons facing up put about 1/2" of mystry oil in the cylinders for about a week. Then gently with a piece of wood between the cylinder and hammer, tap each one back and forth untill they break loose. Pull the pistons out, Hone the cylinder and replace the rings = new motor It's not that bad. You got all winter to make it happen.

Johnson has a detailed schematics online

I had to work on my Johnson outboard over the summer and this site really helped, they have pictures of your specific engine blown up to every nut and screw on it. It was a great reference. I only had to change the impeller, but it was nice to see where everything was before I opened her up. Good luck! -Sean They ask for your email, but I leave it blank and click on "View Parts Catalogs". Once you're there select Johnson and click "go" you'll get a list on the left of years of Johnson outboards, select your year > model and go from there. http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E

2 stroke.

Wow... This really brings me back in time. As other posts said, you have all Winter to work on it. I had a 1966 6hp sailmaster...Found a machine shop to hone the cylinders, and I installed new pistons, rings and roller bearings. She ran like a champ after that...have fun. Eric
