I have purchased a Simrad navico WP30 Wheel pilot. I will soo install it on my H 30T 1991. It seems the shift lever (installed on the aft side of the pedestal) will prevent an easy installation. Any thoughts of similar installations? also I want to hook up NEMA 0813 to my nexus system. Thoughts?

Lever is where?

Are you sure of the location? If it is an Edson with the lever mounted on the center of the back of the pedestal then no problem. The clearance between that lever and the Simrad clutch lever is close but not too close. If it is really on the side and has to be pulled back toward the wheel how does it clear the wheel?

Installing wp30

I had the same concern installing a WP30 on my 89 H30. I loosened the set screw for the F/R lever and slid it to the right (starboard if you will) just a bit. I thought about cutting another groove in the lever to "lock" the set screw but after a full year of use, it hasn't moved. I also cut about an inch of the clutch engagement lever. Be sure to place the lever behind the screw on the backside of the unit when it is in the fully disengaged position. Setting it there locks it in place. If it isn't "locked" behind the screw it will hang up. I have been very satisfied with the WP30. Allows me to sail solo when neccessary. -Doug S/V Brenda Gail

WP30 Installation

I purchased the WP30 by mail and my boat partner took the unit up to the boat but did not install it. Our boat is 250 miles from where I live which makes it difficult to work on. My partner said the shift level (clutch)was in the way of the unit so we purchased a level with a slight offset. He also mentioned that a screw head was in the way and wanted to drill a hole in the unit......I will have to see this for myself before any drilling. My question: What is the best location for mounting the remote plug.....in cockpit, companionway, inside? The cord is long enough to reach almost any where on the boat. Should I locate a terminal box in the lazarette and run the autopilot wires, remote wires, and power supply there? Or do I have to run the wires back to the Edson? I would like to get the installation instructions so when I go up to the boat I will know what I am dealing with? I will also check with another dealer to see if he has instructions. Thanks Gary

What I did

My wiring installation is not an approved method I am sure, but it works fine on my '89 H30..... I bought a 4 switch panel, mounted it next to the guest battery sw which is located just inside the aft cabin area. I bought a water proof plug recepticle from Simrad but it looks a lot like the one WM sells. I mounted the recepticle just aft of the pedestal base. I wanted to be able to remove the unit for Winter storage. I ran the wires through the existing tube for the pedestal instruments and into the area under the aft cabin. I connected the auto pilot power wires to the sw panel and powered off the guest sw. I am grounded directly to the battery post. I didn't want to try to fish wires all the way to the factory electrical panel. I love my auto pilot. Doug S/V Brenda Gail
