I am trying to repair our jib furler which now has a broken lower drum plate.
I cannot order even hunt down a replacement lower drum ring, unless I can identify it. I thought that is was an early Hood furling unit, but there were also Isomat furlers, early CDI models used in the early 80's. There may have been an outer metal coverplate that has been removed. This would make sense, becausee the furling line will easily fall off the drum, if the line is not tied off tightly to a cleat when unfurled, causing the line to wrap around the base of the head stay.
The outer drum rings are made of an ABS type of black plastic. The main furler extrusion is typical twin luff groove aluminum. There are no makers markings left on this older furler, which worked well until the lower plate cracked & broke off during a hard sail. The P.O. had tied the furling line to a hole drilled into the plastic drum ring, instead of the drum core, which finally cracked from the torque of unfurling. I do not believe that this furler is original equipment from Catalina, as my original order form shows no option for a furling unit in 1980.
Any ideas or do you recognize this model from one on your C 30?
