Does anyone else on this web have a H23 with a francespar mast? If so how do you raise it? Mr. Wards plans are for a Z-spar. Also, what size outboard do most of you have on the H23? Thanks JOe

I can't help you on the mast, I have a Z-spar. I have a 6 HP Merc on my 23. Seems to be plenty of power for what I need R. Wheeler

9.5hp

Hi, I have a 23.5 Hunter. It came with a great YAMAHA motor. Starts on first pull. But, I think that my 9.5 is too much. It is a lot of wait on the back, and no need to go to that speed...the boat just gets real tippy....when the sails are down going that fast through even small white caps. Of course, I have to adjust the angle I am traveling in regards to the direction of the waves, but sometimes that does not help much...so I have to take it slow. I suggest about 6-8HP. I wont give up my 9.5 just because it is so reliable and an excellent motor. Hope this gives you some help!

Mast raising concept should work

Joe, The mast raising tripod should work just fine on a francespar mast. Here are the important criteria to make sure it works: 1. Make sure the collar of the tripod will fit loosely around the mast so the collar can slide as the mast is raised. 2. If needed, make sure the tripod legs are lengthened or shortened to miss both the shroud arms in the down position and the mast winch in the up position. The tripod pivots as the mast is raised (sliding down the mast). When it is first attached, it fits below the shroud arm. In the raised position it slides down the mast to ... just above the mast winch. The best way to insure you have the right length is to measure from the life line stancion to the shroud when the mast is in the crutch. Raise the mast using your normal method then measure from this same stancion to the mast winch. Make your tripod arms as long as you can without exceeding the lesser of these two dimensions. If this is confusing, send me an email and I can explain in more detail with drawings if you like. Ward warkat@kctc.net

I have an 8hp Nissan. It gets me to hull speed at less than half throttle and I have plenty of grunt in reserve for when the wind and waves kick up. Peter S/V Raven

5 horse motor

I have a 5 hp outboard on my '85 H23 that does the job except when waves or wake lifts the prop out of the water. Wish I had a motor with a long shaft.

For all you length impared out there

The husband of a nurse who works for my wife is the service manager at one of the boat dealers down here. He told me there are extensions available for most of the outboards out there. I may add one next time I service the thing. He also suggested replacing the impeller annually something else I had not heard before.

Replacing the impeller

I suppose replaceing the impeller is more important on powerboats (you're relying more on the engine), but I've always heard you should replace the impeller every year (2 years max!) Also, you should never, EVER, rotate the engine without it being in the water or being hooked up to the flushing "thing". The impeller is rubber and gets damaged when running dry. I agree with Chris

We may motor a lot less less than the powerboaters do, but when we do motor it's usually because sailing is not practical or desirable in that situation. A few examples: narrow channel, strong gusts, strong headwind, unfavorable current, lee shore, approaching squall or thunderstorm, entering narrow port etc. In situations like these where I cannot sail my way out of trouble, I want to know I can rely on my outboard 100%.
