Heading home against the wind in rough water yesterday during in SCA conditions, and boat was was occasionally (perhaps semi-frequently) landing hard off a wave, and motor was occasionally nearly high and dry off the same (1998 Macgregor 26x, 1998 Honda BF50)

After spooling up to near full throttle, and running fine at 5500rpms for about 10 minutes, with no warning (don't recall if directly related to a hard landing off a big wave or not), RPM's cut back, and I throttled back in response, at which point the motor stalled. Was able to restart quickly, but after that, full throttle would only develop about 3000rpms. Was able to continue motoring at 3000 all the way home, but could not get past it.

In a sheltered cove, cut the engine for a while, and restarted. Idled fine, but when trying to get 90% on the throttle, grumbled and sputtered, and wanted it back at about 50%, where it seemed to function about normally.

Seems to operate fine in those parameters, but after that moment, no 5850 possible.

Here are the particulars:
- No warning tone, no red overheat light on the helm control (though it did seem to behave like other boats that I've seen overheated in the past by cutting to lower RPM's. However, this was after motoring for just 10 minutes at 90% throttle). Green oil light on the console is lit (which should be good, I believe) and level was fine at departure (I'll recheck tomorrow).
- Water pump telltale 'tinkling', but not what I would call the stronger jet of full power (though I can't get to full power to check). I would call it normal for the engine speed. Though the water coming out it was very warm (almost hot to the touch) at the exit hole. Never put my finger on it before, other than to clean/clear it with a tool, so not sure if that's normal.
- At idle, seemed to rev up okay a couple of times, but really sputtered on a consistent effort at high rpm idle with the choke lever.
- Prop looks fine, and doesn't seem to be wrapped in any way.
- Gas is brand new, 91 octane. (I do have a gas/water separator, but haven't drained it since the incident).

It ran pretty normally (sounding) on the way back with the throttle at 90%, just only spooled up to 3,000. After a break, it only wanted 50%, again to the 3,000 limit.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

You may have gotten one of your spark wires wet.

Its so hard to diagnose an engine problem without seeing it. So many variables come into play. From your description, I would suspect the ignition system first. Check all your connections and make sure they are tight, then I would start with changing the plugs and fuel filter (do the cheapest scenarios first). It never hurts to keep these fresh anyway. It would really help to see the condition of the plug tips when you pull them. They can tell you if your running hot, too lean, too rich, burning oil etc. If that doesn't do the trick then check/replace the coil(s). This should at least give you a good start on determining if you have a more serious problem.

The water discharge is normally warm but should not be scalding. Hope this helps!

I had a Honda 7.5 hp. Same issues. Turned out to be a dime sized hole in the exhaust riser. Hard to find visually, IIRC it took a breakdown to find it (back in 1987!).

Good luck.

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

If you can, test by pumping on the fuel bulb to see if performance returns when running at wfo.

It is a quick and easy test that does not require any parts to be removed.

Does the motor have efi or carbs.

fuel filter clogs in rough conditions...

some computers won't allow more power with low pressure.
