Just purchased an S2 28 footer model 8.6( my first sailboat), Am perplexed by the reefing system. 2 lines for the two reefing points which go through the kenyon boom, exit the aft end and go through the reefing cringle to the other side of the boom. These originate at the mast and go through a block at the mast base and to a cleat higher on the mast. When rigged as per the prior owner, even with the lines totally let out, the lines are too short and prevent the main from being raised fully. Does anyone know the proper rigging for this sort of reefing system? Help would be greatly appreciated! (I've disconnected the whole thing and hope I don't have to reef before I figure it out!!) Thanks!

Couple of ideas

Don't take this the wrong way, but you didn't say whether the reefing lines were cleated off on the mast (they shouldn't be) when you were trying to raise the main all the way. Reefing lines should be just slack when the mainsail is raised to full height. Another possibility is that the reefing lines may just be too short. With all due respect, are you sure the PO had it right? They may not have. I hope this helps. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

S2 reefing

I have a 1980 8.5, with the same reefing system. I think you just have a reefing line that is too short. On my boat the reefing line is long enough that with the sail fully raised it can be reached from the cockpit. I think you just need to change the line for one a few feet longer.
