On my 1986 HUNTER31 I have an Origo 2 burner stove top w/ oven below. The previous owner never used it and in the 2 years that we have had it; we've never used it as well. My wife is not comfortable with the alcohol setup. I'm thinking of removing it and replacing it with a KENYON express butane single burner and a 800watt .7 cu.ft microwave below(to be used at shore). I'd like to get some feedback as to my idea before I commit to it.

Don't touch that dial.

Alan: This is one of the safest stoves around. There are small flame guards for the stove top if you do not have them. The sort of diffuse the flame on the stove top. You can get them from Origo (they may be free, they were a retro fit item). I assume that you folks are familiar with the old pressurized alcohol stoves. Yes, they were dangerous. They have burned down many boats. The Origo stoves don't flame up and work quite well. We have cooked easter dinner on the stove and oven. The oven cooks slow but really does work (at shore and at anchor). If you ever see one of these little butane stove get banged when the canister is attached you would never consider having it aboard. We had a fire with one of these on one of our deck patios at the marina and it was scary. There are many that use these butane canisters and have never had a problem. But I have seen it happen and would NOT ever consider one on my boat. If you decide to sell your unit post it here on the web site. It will sell very quick.

Alcohol Stove

I too have the 2 burner non pressurized ORIGO stove with the oven. I swear by it not at it. I've owned the boat for two years and the stove has never let me down. I have heard of one instance where having the oven on for an extended period caused the upper burner to ignite, but no damage occured. This hasn't happened to me. Our stove is gimballed and I prefer the non pressurized arrangement over propane or pressurized alcohol. Just remember to fill the pads outside and when they are cool. Don't fill them too full, just enough that when held at a 45 degree angle the fuel just laps over the lower edge of the grilled hole in the pad.

Origo Stoves

Alan: Getting rid of an Origo stove? Why thats blasphemy. Sure it takes a little longer to boil water and bake muffins but the safety factor far outweighs the small inconvenience we put up with. If your unit does not have the flame spreaders Origo will furnish them free of charge. Maybe this will help you decide to keep the unit, the 2 burner with oven sells in Defender for $1200. bucks. Don't do it..you'll be sorry!

I used to have pressurized alchohol, now I have an Origo. Wouldn't give it up for the world. If I had a new boat built for me I would use this stove. It's safe and reliable. Chris

I agree, DON'T

We cook all meals aboard when we use the boat, and that is every weekend, we have never had a problem with the stove, very low maintenance, cooks just as at home, just a bit slower, we would not trade it for anything else. We do keep a third electric burner for use at the dock, if we need it.We also have a microwave.

Need A Origo Manual?

I agree that my Origo cooks a little slow but is safe and easy to use. I would not consider changing. Sounds like you need a manual. If so, I am glad to send you one.

Keep the Stove

I would absolutely keep the stove. It's easy, cheap, and consistent albeit a little slow at times. The oven also works great. As a co 85 H31 owner, don't change, it works.

I'm keeping my setup as is. What suggestions do any of you have for the microwave location/storage on a HUNTER31 1986?
