Hi,
I need some help understanding the furling system in my new to me O'day 322. I have what I believe is an Isofurl original furling system. I have the original manual which doesn't give much info (at all!) and have read a lot online about how to work this system, but I think either mine is a bit different or I am missing parts.
In the first and second pic you can see the drum with the blocks and the cleat on the side. Now here is where I get confuse, the third picture shows the inner jib halyard connected to that "traveler" with a messenger line attached. There is no "car" as mentioned in the manual or rigrite.com. In the last picture you can see the other end of jib halyard with the shackle.
So, how does this work? just attached head of the sail to halyard, and pull messenger line to raise sail, then cleat messenger line? then use blocks in drum to adjust tack? although not sure where I would cleat that line.
Also, the luff of the genoa has a 3/8 rope on it (in a pocket) from top to bottom, what is that for in this scenario?

Last one, in the last picture, what is the "upper spoil" for?

Thanks for any help!

Ab

Hi Rad, thanks for the offer, but the boat is in Stamford, CT (will bring it to Glen Cove NY when launched).
I had a CDI in my previous boat and I understand how to use the internal halyard but the cdi had a shackle in the drum to attach to the tack of the sail, and the traveler was much sturdier. Not sure how to use the upper portion of the drum also. Also what is the 3/8 rope in the luff of the sail in this scenario (no locking mechanism)? Confusing!
Do you have your boat in Glen Cove?

If it's still not cooperating by the time you get to the rOnDAYvous, rest assured you'll have more help there than you know what to do with. You might also reach out to Rich Breeden, a rOnDAYvous vet, who sails an O-30 out of Bridgeport and might be able to meet you in Stamford for some on-site help.

I'd love to help you myself, but my 322 has a Harken furling system.

I have my boat on the south shore in Bay Shore Marina.....if the boat was in Glen Cove I'd be poor cause no work would get done and I'd make no money to spend on the boat :)

RAD I hear you! same here!

Pete, work is getting in the middle (inst it always!), that is why I haven't been able to confirm. If not by boat, although almost a sin, I would go by car Saturday since I am only 45 min away.

Ab,

I hear ya. But I have faith. There's still 10 weeks to go, give or take, and by mid-July you'll be itching for a weekend sailing trip to the rOnDAYvous. See you there.
