Help, steering brake will not work

Are you sure the brake isn't really working???

I ask because the first year I had my 410 I thought it wasn't working because when it was "locked" I could turn the wheel. But is turned out that it was locked and it was just that turning the wheel was so much torque that the brake couldn't hold that. But with the boat out of the water you could not turn the rudder.

I also found out that I used my boat for a year with the lock on because turning the lock wheel was just unscrewing it from the plastic insert! So had to glue the plastic to the metal handwheel part.Thought I was going to have to take it apart to fix, but loosening the brake and giving the lock wheel a good smack freed it up.

Assuming Don's observations are not applicable (check first cause it sure sound like a likely possibility) you can buy brake pads for the mechanism to bring it back into operational status

My wheel truns hard. Brake does not work. Doing the pad thing looks like a very big job. I just live with it.

Below is a reply I posted to this question some time ago. Hope it is helpful.

There was also a post from s/v C-Time who replaced his pads. Unfortunately I not able to find that post. Perhaps you'll have better luck.

I have a H410,2002. The wheel brake does little ie will not tighen / hold the wheel. Last year I contacted Edsonr and purchased the replacement pads ( and I seem to recall they also suggested replacing a bearing set while it was all open). They also sent the replacement instructions.I intended to do the job myself. Never really got started. After a coouple hours of dismatling items I gave up. The get to the pads you will need to get to the bottom bearings, remove the steering shaft etc. Decided to live without the wheel brake. I spoke to Rick Cowan at Edson and the work instruction bulletin is number EB 398-99 CDi 470 Brake Replacement.PDF. I've tried attaching a copy, if it doesn't post properly let me know and I'll email a copy.

Replaced mine this year. Not trivial, but not as bad as some other tasks I've completed. Hardest part for me was getting at the cotter pin in order to get the shaft out, followed by not dropping any parts down the pedestal.

Took about an hour. I did not remove steering shaft as wheel turns smoothly/ bearings appear fine.

And was that on a Hunter 410, which is the subject boat for the thread???
