The valve to the thru the hull for the galley sink broke off the turn handle. It is a gate valve but I would like to replace it with a ball type. This is under the water line and because of its location inside bottom of the starboard Lazarette it is hard to get at. The boat is a 1983 27 Cherubini. My question is about the size of the thru the hull. Is it a 1 1/4 inch or a 1 1/2 inch? When I rmove the broken valve I would like to be able to screw the new one in without getting to much water in the boat. Would it be really necessary to place a plug on the outside? Also I'm concerned with the possibility that while trying to unscrew the old valve that I may foul the thru the hull as it seats in its base. The wood spacer is a little rotted and pieces are starting to come apart. Any comments from someone who has done this before would be appreciated.

For now...

You'll have to haul to fix it. Meanwhile, divert the drain into the bilge and try to minimize your sink water until you can fix it.

Agree with Bill.

There are too many things to go wrong, especially when working in such tight quarters. Same reason I still have the gate valve for the galley sink on my H37C. It is a really big bronze valve on a very large thru-hull. I have never seen a seacock or ball valve that big that I could afford. Gray water into the bilge shouldn't be too bad. But you wouldn't want to have it sit there. You will want a pump arrangement that gets most of it.

Or use a plastic bowl

Bill and Ed are way right about fixing this one on the hard! Or maybe in the sling once your yard gets most of the boats launched. The main use of the kitchen sink on our '77 h27 is to wash dishes. To preserve hot, soapy or rinse water, we use a pot and a nice big plastic bowl. A third plastic bowl or bucket would serve to catch all the wash and rinse water. Then you could dump it overboard from the cockpit, or out the sink in the head. (I just don't like to add water to the bilge unless I have to, because it is so flat.) That ought to get you through until you get your repair materials, and a slot for the lift. Splashed Lady Lillie today, so I can't tell you dimensions for the fitting from the bottom. Good Luck, David Lady Lillie

Thanks Guys

Thanks for the advice, I may divert wash water to a 5 gallon bucket as the bilge is quite shallow. ACE Hardware store sells italian bronze ball type valves quite reasonable. The 1 1/2 inch valve is $14.85. I'll wait for haul out and replace all the valves.
