ok peggie i bought ko and my tank vent still stinks. not the inside of the boat just the vent when i pump the head. i have been reading that i need more vent. is this true? i have a c-30 with a vent on the port side with about a 1/4 inch hole in the stanchion and the hose to the stanchion is about 5/8 like the others. am i missing anything? i'm in san diego so it doesn't get too hot here in the summer or any other time. about 75 or so degrees all summer. but that vent is bad. maybe i already know the answer and need another vent. sounds a bit crazy to me. anyway all help i will be very happy. thank you!

Friend has the same problem.

Roger: My friend has a Cat'34 and it has the same problem. When they pump the head the odor that comes out of the vent could kill ya. They have the stinkiest head I have ever smelled. I believe that your analogy of the problem is correct. Not enough venting of the tank. As Peggie has said before, KO is not for everyone/everyboat. You need O2 to make it work. You might try Odorlos to see if you have better success. Otherwise I would recommend that you replumb the vent, which may be a good idea anyway. Also why don't try to flush out this vent and see if there is something in the vent line that prevents adaquate ventilation.

Not crazy at all...

In fact, not even an original idea. All organic matter breaks down the same ways: odor free when it breaks down aerobically, putrid and very ripe when it breaks down anaerobically. That's why compost piles have to be tossed and aerated or they or rot and stink...why septic tanks stink...and why decorative ponds in malls and office buildings have all those fountains, waterfalls and green plants in 'em. A holding tank is full of organic matter. When it gets enough air, it doesn't stink...when it doesn't, it becomes septic (ever wonder where the word antiseptic comes from?) and stinks. Catalinas are fine boats, but they're notorious for stinking because Catalina insists on putting holding tanks in a locations that are all but impossible to ventilate and compounds the problem by being concerned only with keeping water from going down the vent...and completely ignore even the most basic principles of nature, much less sewage management. K.O. doesn't have a prayer of working until/unless you modify the tank vent to take advantage of those basic principles.
