I recently purchased an H33' 1982, she's a little dirty and needs some TLC that I intend to provide prior to the ice melt and launch in the spring. Can anyone provide info. about an H33 operating / owners manual. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Thanks Kurt - I'll keep looking for a manual - But

But , have you had any problems with the boat , anything chronic about this model. As well have you personally made any modifications to improve the boats performance. About the only concern I have is that I have to replace or re-pack the stuffing box. I was told by the survey that it and the cutlass bearing need replacing. I am thinking about dropping the rudder to do the work( remove the shaft ) . Any thoughts.

Dropping rudder is challenge

If your H33 is in the cradle, you will need to dig a hole under the rudder if you drop it all the way out. I wonder if you can drop it just enough to have the shaft clear when pulling it out? If you have the shaft out, you might consider a dripless stuffing box. I am sure you will agree that the less time you have to spend trying to adjust the stuffing box, the better. It is in a very difficult place to get to.

cutlass replacement tool

Link is to a press tool specifically designed for the H33 though with changed dimensions applicable to other boats as well. Using this tool, shaft doesn't have to be removed, just propeller. When I replaced my own cutlass bearing I didn't have access to this puller design and so ended up taking off the strut and removing and replacing the bearing off the boat. Repacking the stuffing box is an easy job, replacing the stuffing box not easy, I'd repack if the hoses and fittings are ok.

do you push the bearing fore or aft?

terry, is the bearing one piece or two? if one, do you push the bearing towards the bow and cut off the shaft, or do you drop the shaft from the engine? regards, mike

I have both, .....

I am the original owner of "Freebird", purchased new in 1982, a Hunter 33. I also have my manual. I've done just about everything there is to do to this boat except sail her in salt water. Be glad to help out anyway I can. For an overview of some of the projects I have undertaken, do a search on this site using my name "David Underwood" . Let me know what hull number yours is.. mine is 539.

cutlass press operation

from the web site::: The bearing remover in use: Drop the forward plate over the prop shaft between the strut and the hull. Then slide the bearing pusher, followed by the aft plate, over the end of the prop shaft. Connect with threaded rods, washers, and nuts. Tighten the nuts to push the bearing out. That's it. Once the old bearing is removed you'll have to use a Dremel tool to cut it from the shaft. Of course, you can use this tool to push the new bearing back in, just slide the new bearing over the end of the prop shaft, and omit the pusher.

Cutless Bearing

Peter, I recently changed out the cutless bearing on my H-33. Don't overlook the two set screws in the strut securing the bearing, they may be hidden under paint. I used a different technique to remove the shaft though. I pulled the strut itself first, it was a little loose so I took it off in order to re-bed it. It's probably easier to do that then to drop the rudder. If you want to try this technique, and your strut screws are locked tight, give me a hollar, I came up with a unique (I think) way to remove them without damaging anything. I've also replaced my shaft seal with a PYI Packless shaft seal (did this to my 27' Watkins also). G'luck

Owners Manual +

Great responses, thanks very much to all. As I begin “Affinity’s " reconstruction and surely run into "what do I do now" scenarios I will be looking for more guidance. I have began to strip the interior, galley, salon are now down to the bare walls. The sole looks to be in good shape and I will attempt to refinish. I have looked up several suggestions on this site. The head is clean and in good condition but I plan to add new wall sections over the ugly, old wall covering. Has anyone done this.??? As well, I would like to redesign the port side hanging locker. To remove it I will need to cut it away from the hull. It is glassed in on 2 sides. Would this damage or compromise hull integrity??. It appears that both storage lockers, port and starboard are attached this way simply to keep them securely in place. Thanks.

Bulkheads

Yes, the "ugly grass mat" covering on the interior walls of the head are a real sight to behold. An acquaintance of mine painted them on a H 30 and in my opinion (which we all know is unquestionable) it looked very good. Certainly an excelent return for the amount of effort and material involved. A bit of Brightside polyurethane and you've got a whole new look. As far as tearing out the tabbed in bulkheads at the V-berth, my guess would be that they serve a strucrural purpose and you might want to look elsewhere for something to play destructo derby on. Oil canning, mast loads and so-on.
